If you saw Star Wars on the first third or seventh day after it was released then we were probably in the same cinema at the same time.

They built a job centre on the site later, I remember the snooker hall too, in my memory at least it was about as classic a seedy snooker hall as you could get. It was very nearly as mysterious as the Masonic Hall above the old court house.

Did you ever sneak into the Devonshire Hospital and shout up into the dome, that was the thing us naughty children did, at least until one of my freinds got caught, (Not really the best thing to be doing in a hospital I know) It made one hell of a noise though, I always wanted to play an electric Guitar right in the middle, the reverb would have been amazing.

Wow...thats so bizzare...smiley - ok I can't recall which day it was, I were only 6 or 7 at the time! I just remember the bleeding queues and I were the last one to get a ticket...everyone else got turned away...heee!

We left Buxton that year I think, so I didn't grow up there and get to do naughty things in that area....smiley - laugh well apart from one time I caught the bus and went up to Sheffield, cos in them days it were free! I remember the fairs and Wells dressings and floats n things....

Have you discovered www.friendsreunited.co.uk yet? Its where you can get in touch with old school friends, workmates etc if you so choose smiley - ok

Did you ever go to Hardwick Square School.....recall a Mrs Barney? What an iron fist she were!

My mom used to work at the Pavillion Gardens, my Step dad was a manager there too, and my moms sister and other friends used to work at Otters, I think it were called...smiley - smiley

Sounds as if your Dad might have been one of t 'Authority figures' that would chase us teenagers away from t front of t cafe in t gardens. Hanging arround arguing and generally making nusiances of ourselves cos we adnt mony for flicks and haddn't conned a landlord in t thinking we was older than we were.

Some of me Dad's cousins worked at Otters, others worked at Frodo's me grandad for instance. T wells dressings were always fun we got t dress t childrens well once when I was in primary school (Fairfield).

One of me teachers ended up as headmaster at Hardwick ,Mr Shinwell but Ahm not sure of when that was but it wasn't long after I left (1973), so he may have been at hardwick when you were.

Ah dont much go looking for t people Ah was in school with, Me Mums Dad was deputy Headmaster at Normanton, which was a private school, so despite me dads authentic working class roots Ah ended up going to school with a bunch of snobs with more pocket money than sense, Ah see some of teenagers Ah knocked arround with when Ah go back for visits, but t be honest most of em is more interested in t pub and t last wife/girlfreind that left em than talking bout old times.

Ee them were days when 7 yer old could get on bus for Sheffield and not ave social services turning up in a hell of an urry

It might 'ave been Fairfield and not Sheffield that I went to onna bus....I forget now, it was quite near to Buxton...and was just a 15-20 min bus ride away. My auntie lived up there and I had quite a few friends from over there too, in fact, it's scary we might have known each other or known the same kids....*arrrgh* small world!

I actually did get into trouble that day, because I neglected to tell me mam where I were off too, and I arrived home just as a policeman and woman were knocking onna door....eeeeek....!

Inevitably I'm wondering who y might be,

No need to answer just find myself wondering,

I also wonder where you ended up after Buxton,

I variously traversed the country as an itinerant musician for a while, but settled in Brum for a while and Boston (Lincs not US) and Oxford (More permanently) and Wiltshire (Also more permanently)

Well after Buxton, we moved to various parts of Wales and then Hayfield nr Glossip, a few more locations in Wales and then I moved to Telford, from there down south into Cambridge area and shuffled houses there for a whiles...and then here to NY...gotta be the biggest shuffle yet....

Who knows mebbe Australia next!!!

Wow the big Apple, I can't compete with that, The best I can do is some voluntary work in Croatia just after the war with Serbia. I have been all over Britain though, here and there I remember most of it but sometimes in the wrong order as I was somewhat out of my head for most of it (I'm a good boy now)

I PLay guitar mostly, but I also play whistles Drums Keyboards and mandolins, ukulale ect.

I do a lot of therapeutic work with Music with Kids so you tend to get good at a lot of things without ever really being very good. Kids dont think you are a real musician until you show them you can play most things. (Even if you dont do it awfully well) Guitar is the real thing though, inevitably I am a Hendrix fan, but I am very keen on Deango Reinheart as well as BB King ect.... I like a lot of different Music Styles though so I listen to more than that.

My Mum Came from Wales, Aberystwyth, so if you were anywhere near there?

Sounds like you moved about an awful lot, I find myself wondering if your parents were chasing jobs or if jobs were chasing them.

Been to Aberystwyth allot, nice beach allot of sandbars there at times...! Used to go to Borth allot too, in fact wrecked my first car there doing handbrake turns...*chuckles* when I were wild n' 17 that were *sighs of nostalga* But no,never lived there...lived, Welshpool, New Radnor, Llandrindod, Bishops Castle, Three Cocks, Painscastle, Cregrina, Knighton, Shrewsbury are just some that spring to mind, and not in that order either smiley - winkeye

Dunno what my parents were upto, job chasing mebbe, cranky landlords...perhaps we have gypsy blood, or maybe we are just get bored and the grass looks greener so we toddle off over there....*shrug*

NY because long distance courting sucks...and we had to choose a base, being as my pard has a good job and better career development where he is right now and it made more sense for me to travel there....besides I was curious about America...smiley - biggrin needed to make a fresh start.

Perhaps we shall move back to the UK sometime, in fact Geo says that if Bush is elected again, we shall...he hates the Bush empire so much.

If we do move back shall prolly pick somewhere further up north this time like say Liverpool or thereabouts, because I have never lived there and its not far from me Dad...and the rest of the family are far enough away to not commute very often smiley - winkeye Or perhaps London area again, I love London....well I guess anywhere near a biggish sorta city...I'm such a townie now smiley - ok

Oh, I forgot, was so busy trying to decide which city I'd rather got waylaid north n' south...

In answer to your Q, I don't actually live in NYC but I am assured its fun as well as expensive. Haven't made it to the city yet...hopefully this Summer!

Don't really have enuff money to have much fun in the way of going out right now, if we did, we'd be going to plays, shows and wotnot....and seeing bands n' concerts....*sigh* all that costs travel and tickets...

As it is we hangout and get drunk at home at the weekends and eat lotsa pizza, play video games and watch quite a few movies, read books etc..and I play online...smiley - biggrin

Is it Just me or is there a drought on good SF TV at the mo, Appart from the old staples of ST and SG1, The Battlestar Galactica was a good remake, but I had just got into a couple of new ones and then they got pulled Firefly, John Doe, even Farscape got axed: and then on british Sky at the mo all they have are all sorts of boring reality shows.

The latest one is a 'lovematch' type thing with half a dozen men all swearing undying love to this woman and competing for her affections and £50,000. but the catch is she (You guessed it) is a he. It will be interesting to see their faces at the end but, it is as boring as hell to watch. (The only reason I know about it is my missus watches it) but I'd rather have John Doe back despite it's very weak premise.

Yes drought, we need a good new sf series, seems to be allot of crappy low budget stuff that even me, as illogical as I am can figure out doesn't wash with scientific explanations...if THEY attempt at all at explaining their crap...been ignoring the sf channel just lately...

Really, Brit sky has gone all reality showish? When I left it was still very much sf...ah well not missing anything then. The lovematch sounds kinda funny....smiley - laugh

Speaking of Battlestar Galactica...just reminded me of a film that didn't do very well, called umm Battlefield Earth with John Travola...very good - at least I thought so.smiley - ok

Eee by heck!

Post 17

StrontiumDog

I was quite ambivalent about battlefield earth,

For

It was a quite good plot, humans being oppressed, finding a saviour, utterly defeating bad guys. Liked the harriers.

Against

I am somewhat sceptical about L Ron Hubbards role as Messiah, seems very cult in the suspect sense of the word, and it raises immages of the Jonestown masacre and the Railian obsession with cloning. To be fair I havn't heard too much bad about scientologists, but having read Dianetics, it seemed a bit like turining other peoples science into a religion and making religious tenants of unresolved scientific principles with debatable premises.

Please keep talking to me if you are a scientologist because I am not trying to be offensive, it's just how it seems to me.

In my experience most people deserve more credit for their intelligence than they realise, but if you mean I used more complicated language than I should then point taken.

As a child I had tremendous difficulties with dyslexia and as many children do overcompensated by learning and using far more complicated language than is really necissary. This is a hard habit to break. One of te reasons I like computers is that they have spell checkers, even though I don't allways use them as you might have noticed with some of the odd spellings you might have encountered in my posts.

Post 20

Researcher 556780

Well it's very nice of you to say so smiley - smiley Still you are crediting me with far too much knowledge. I have read allot of books and have a love of SF and all things regarding science and natural history, but my education growing up, has some extensive gaps...smiley - smiley

I just really liked the story in the movie and the artwork involved, did you notice that not one of the shots was a striaght view? I wasn't really looking for religious connotations because I am not religiously minded and don't really get that sort of thing till someone points it out to me, for instance when I was younger reading C.S Lewis books I had no idea that they were loosely based on the bible! I didn't know till my pard and I were discussing his books one day, and that was well about a year or so ago....I'm 33 by the way...*chuckles*

Firstly, I have never heard of the Jonestown massacre, and the Railian obsession with cloning, I haven't read Dianetics either so wasn't entirely sure where you were coming from.
