I was just thinking, but although you're a seasoned fanfic writer, this has probably occurred to you before:
If you were going to write a "normal" Holmes romance fic, wouldn't you just bring back Irene Adler to avoid Mary-Sues? Or perhaps Irene could evolve into a Mary-Sue...?
