Hi!
I'm Joe C, and I'm one of the Assistant Community Editors (ACEs) here. It's my job to say hello and help you explore h2g2.
Have some to keep you going
If you want to ask anything about how the site works, you can leave a message for me here (just click on the 'Reply' button after a message). Or you can go over to the feedback forums here: <./>Feedback</.>. This is my page - U218534 - go there and click 'Leave a Message' if you want to talk to me there.
If you want to find out how to get around, try <./>DontPanic- Tour</.>. Oh, and if you have any burning questions you need to ask about absolutely anything (from 'What is a pinnock?' to 'Why does tea taste sweet after chewing raw onion?'), go to <./>Askh2g2</.>. Loads of people hang around in there talking to other people, and answering each other's questions
If you want to know how to use smileys (like these , and even
), go to <./>Smileys</.>. Also, check out A690518 for tips on making your user page look a bit more exciting (with pictures and stuff). If you're using a digibox and have any trouble, you can pay a visit to Mr Manda at U193090 (he has lots more useful links for digibox users).
One of the best things about h2g2, is that besides reading and talking, you can write your own pages too. Do you have any hobbies, or interests? If you're interested, I'll show you how to go about writing an entry on them.
The Editors have set up a page to <./>Welcome</.> you. Finally, there's a page at A719840 with loads of links, tips for new Researchers (that's what we call our members) and so on.
If there's anything I can do, drop me a note . But remember - Don't Panic!

Hiya,
The version of h2g2 that we have now has been going since April 28, 1999, when the BBC took over. Before that, it was run similarly, but by a private company set up by Douglas Adams. Before *that*, the original idea for h2g2 was to have a database of information, news, etc, and for it to be available through your mobile phone, so it's portable like a real Hitch-hiker's Guide. Since the BBC take-over, they stopped that . I've only been here a year, but I like it as it is
The text in your name - click the 'preferences' link (which will be somewhere near the top of your Personal Space; where exactly depends on what skin you're using), and there's an option in there where you can change your name
Thanks for the

Cheers. sussed it!
Thanks for the background. Always thought the internet was the perfect place for something like the guide Douglas Adams concieved. I had no idea he'd already done it! shame about the mobile phone idea, but hey, at least the Beeb aren't Infindim enterprises

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
