Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

This is shameful! Coronation Street can in no way be compared to the run of the mill soap. It was started by a guy called Tony Warren who was gay and out in early 1960's Manchester. Even to this day it draws heavily on Northern theatrical and music hall traditions - currently best personified by the character of Fred Eliott (I say, currently personified by....) played by the wonderful John Savident (cinephiles may remember him from 'A Clockwork Orange').

It has some of the funniest lines on Television, short of 'The Sopranos' (My favourite ever being Norman 'Curly' Watts' "Kuala Lumpur?! You only have to say it to know its not on!" Only last week there was a wonderful episode involving a fight in the Rovers' Return pub to the soundtrack of Dierdre Rachid playing 'Amazing Grace' on the harmonica. As in The Sopranos, you had to understand several sub-plots to get the joke. Rich, multi-layered TV drama!

Plus - it was the first soap to feature a transsexual character.

(Oh ...and the guy with the glasses held together by elastoplast was Jack Duckworth).
