Gender conundrum

Post 1

shagbark

In another forum I wanted to respond to something said by 3dots
since I didn't know if I was speaking to a male or female I resorted to
"the researcher and its"
to which 3 dots replied they were not an it, if I was unsure of gender I should use they.
but then if I am making that plural don't I then need to change researcher to researchers so both will be pluralsmiley - huh

smiley - wow

You are asking the one whom Tufty calls 'o0o The Perceived Entity o0o'? smiley - laugh

I think 3 dots is male. I can't remember his previous name, but I've always thought the gender to be masculine </> smiley - winkeye

Personally I tend to mix it a bit and say:

"This Researcher and their...."

"This Researcher's Entries are... "

"They have written elsewhere...."

Does that help?
