What's New is Old

Through the years, I have been back and back to this place, easily my longest running home on the web. I come back and look at the faces I recognize and marvel at how many are new, and I say little or nothing and wander off, but always I return.
And now, when I return, when I land on the front page, I can't help but be a little bit awed by how much it feels like the home it originally was, 12 years ago for me. It probably sounds silly and trite to say that it feels like a fog has lifted, but it really does. There is a definite shift in aura, from that of a place that was once silly that was trying now to be serious, to one that has rediscovered the joy that being silly can bring, and the revelation that silliness and seriousness are not mutually exclusive.
In other words, it's just so good to see home being home again. Welcome back, h2g2!

It's a curious thing...

...coming back to a space sporadically through the years, finding it still there, still waiting, still the same in general spirit as it was 12 years ago.
It's a curious thing having a record of conversations I'd long since forgotten, and many that I still remember fondly, or reading articles that I had my hand on that have since been read by countless others.
I come back, and it's all still here, ever waiting, ever welcoming. I've lived on 2 different continents, have had nearly 2 dozen different addresses, 3 children, 2 marriages and as many divorces, half a dozen jobs, many tears and twice as many laughs... And yet some things never change.
What a curious, wonderful, happy thing.

Ramble ramble

Just rambling mindlessly for a moment...
Had a good-ish weekend, went to see someone very special to me, even if I don't know if that feeling is entirely mutual. Blah. But due to the weather I ended up stranded there for a day, which didn't bother me in the least 
... Not to mention that fact that my car is more driveable than I'd previously assumed - thought I'd banged the muffler off in a parking adventure, but seems to be fairly ok... So I have my car back. Not to mention my vehicular pride when she started up after 3 weeks of near or subzero temperatures. Excellent!
Dating, by the way, is not my cup of tea. I should start my own campaign to rename Thursday "Dating" because I really can't get the hang of it. My life is so bizarre as of late. I just don't even know what to do lol. One day I'll regain some sense of sanity, I suppose.
Life is interesting to say the least. I've yet to decide whether I'm actually pleased with it at the mo'.

Self-deconstruction

Going through a very odd phase in my life now... Not sure what to think of it, or myself... Writing it off as being young, etc. but... I don't know. I think I'm going through a sort of slow self-destruction (a phrase eerily close to the subject title). Trying not to actually detonate, lol, not so sure I'm succeeding.
I have no idea what I'm doing. Mostly, I'm happy with the way things are. But a small part of me... I don't know.
Sorry for the ramble. Just getting thoughts out of my head and onto... the screen lol

Day 2

Today was great - getting more comfortable being in the city, which is always good. Just going to do a quick list of things I learned and/or saw today:
1. When in doubt, go!
NYC is amazing... There are more cars than any other place I've ever been to. Even more amazing, is there are far more pedestrians than there are cars. The key here is, the pedestrians know it. People will walk in front of a zooming cab quicker than you can blink an eye, without casting a second glance at the muttering cabbie (or the bumper that is mere inches from their hips). And if one person crosses, many people cross, because of course, there is strength in numbers. This must be one of the chief causes of congestion in the city (aside from the fact that there are about 2000 cars on a street at any given time. "He who hesitates is lost" is definitely the motto around here. By the end of today's treks, I was crossing the streets with the best of them.
2. They do know how to smile here.
You watch the movies and anytime you see NYC, you see a bunch of grimly determined automatons moving purposefully through the streets. This is pretty much true. I swear the only way the people who live and work here know what color the sky is from poems. Everyone has this hunched forward, intense posture, which screams "Leave me alone, and let me go on my way!" However, if you happen to catch their eye, and give them a full on, sincere smile, they look at you with a kind of bemused wonderment, and you can almost hear the muscles creaking as they return it in kind. Smiles are contagious everywhere - in New York, the return smile is even more contagious.
3. Leave your manners at the door.
OK so maybe they smile, but there are no manners in NY. As a matter of fact, I've determined that it must be rude to use what the "rest of the world" considers manners. Don't apologize, whatever you do. The word "sorry" is guaranteed to elicit looks previously reserved for spaced invaders and green things in the refrigerator. "Excuse me" seems to be taken as sarcastic. And I'm pretty sure that when I say "Thank you", I might as well be speaking a completely foreign language.
4. You just never know...
There are not too many places that I know of where you can see a man dressed in full business attire wearing a spiral Santa Hat (looks like a Santa hat that swallowed a spring)...
OK Once again I'm going sooner than I meant to, but quickly, the things I saw today:
Times Square
Central Park
Rockefeller Center (and the Tree) (and some guy proposing to his girlfriend on the ice)
Horse drawn carriages
Cop on a horse
Wow... Just amazing.
