Scottish "Slang"
Rt. Hon. David F. Porteous, Scottish Researcher, Keeper, Minister and rarely seen member of The Banned Started conversation Oct 20, 2001
Hi,
I saw you listed as the editor for the article Scottish Slang. I was wondering if I might persuade you to change the title of that article to Scottish Dialect. I feel this is an important distinction.
While it would be true to say that Geordies, Cockneys, etc. all use slang as the words are derived from the english language, it is not the case with Scotland. Many of the words in the article have a cultural root which has nothing to do with the english language, certainly not being a corruption of it as slang is, and thus qualifies as a dialect.
Although I realise it is not possible to ammend guide entries once they have been edited and accepted -- and it has been some time since this article was written -- I urge you to make the request of the h2g2 upper persons.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
