I thought you might like to know that I have subscribed for the on the move version of the Erie Times, so I can keep up with events in your neck of the woods. Where are you again?

Erie is in the extreme northwest corner of the state. I'm more south-centrally located.

The nearest 'big' city to me is Harrisburg (the state capital). The nearest town is Middletown - home to Three Mile Island.

But you're in the right state!

Maybe in honor of this, I'll try a little write-up on beautiful Erie...

Interesting bit of history about Erie:

- to ensure Pennsylvania had access to the Great Lakes, Pennsylvania annexed that little flange and nearly went to war with New York to keep it.

- the flesh and personal artifacts of General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne are buried in Erie - his bones are at the family plot outside of Philadelphia.

- there was a huge fight over standardizing railroad gauges (the width of the space between the tracks) centered in Erie. A wide set of tracks came into Erie from New York State and thinner tracks left Erie so passengers had to disembark from trains in town and then get on another train to continue their journey - making a lot of money for the folks in Erie who sold stuff to the railway travelers.

- it is the nearest large city to the place where ducks walk on the backs of fish.

The Great Erie Gauge War

It took me longer than I thought it would to do the research on this one, but it is done at last. The First Annual Abi Sawyer Memorial Entry on the City of Erie, Pennsylvania.
