Autumn 1999

It's October already and here in the English East Midlands its strangely still green with few oranges, yellows or reds yet. Wind has picked up but I have had 3 curries in the last few days ! This weekend the sun has been shining and it's felt like summer again.
Kids had a friend to sleepover and yesterday we say Dougs first movie.
It was good actually. Then say the Rugby where England beat Italy.
Next up the All Blacks !
90 days until the millennium and we still have nothing planned.
Anyone got any ideas ?

Northampton Balloon Festival 1999 (Sat 21st Aug)

The whole family got up at 04:30 this morning to go and see the Northampton Balloon Festival morning race.
We saw around 80+ balloons take off in all shapes and sizes.
From the Tescos Shopping Trolley to the Action Man balloon and several double balloons. With one balloon connected to the top of another.
What a marvellous sight !
Pity we're all knackered now and snoozing in chairs (apart from the rowdy kids of course).
Hope to get back for tonights race at 18:30 and Balloon glow and fireworks.
Only problem was getting there.
Signs ran out at a vital stage in Northampton and a road was closed.
So we had to go round the town again to find the race course.
Well worth the effort of getting up early for though.

Monday 16th Aug 1999

The eclipse has come and gone. I wonder what I should do with my eclipse glasses ?
I viewed the eclipse from London.
At 11:00 (19 mins before greatest eclipse) the sky went cloudy.
After a lovely sunny morning when I had seen the "bite" out of the sun get bigger and bigger from around 10:30 onwards.
Pinhole camera worked well too.
At 11:19 it got about as dark as a very big storm.
I have heard from a chap in Totnes where the weather was cloudy.
In Edinburgh it was a lovely day and they had the best view but the least "missing".
Another guy in Stuttgart saw the diamond ring but then a rain cloud covered the rest of totality.
All in all it was great fun but I just know that if I'd gone down to Cornwall I'd have been dissapointed and been desperate for a cloud break.
On Saturday the family and I went to Kirby hall for a great series of battle re-enactments.
Really good and very interesting.
An all day history lesson.

7th Aug 1999

 Nearly forgot.
1st day of the English football season 99/00 today.
My favourite team is West Ham but my son supports Newcastle Utd.
Why ?
He's never been there !
P'raps he likes the shirt...

Today 7th Aug 1999

Well it's wet here in Northamptonshire.
Which is unusual for the recent past.
So the Eclipse is on Wednesday.
God there must be something to put that's interesting.
World Chess Championships in Las Vegas completes 1st week.
What really happened in 535AD around the world ?
Will there be major fallout from the Millenium ?
I feel more confidant now than a year ago.
But will there be any major disruptions ?
Sky grey, road black
If you go out, take a mac.....
