People that are used to chat rooms often start out like that. Their first question is usually 'asl?'. Very inspiring, I must say.

Yeah, I hate it - it's totally impersonal. It's like the security questions the bank ask you when you phone up - it's not a conversation it's going through the motions and trawling for information. What does asl mean anyway?

It can be a way to break the ice, a lot of youngsters use it I think.
But it's definitely not as good as h2g2, where you meet people that are going to become best mates in threads about kissing. That's how I met Galaxy Babe. Much more interesting!
