English is a funny language. They call the elevated surface running alongside a road as the footpath. If an indian was to invent this elevated invention it would be called a begging pltform, a hawker's dias, eastern closet (as opposed to a WC) or a spitoon. Looking at the nuimber of dogs on the bangalore streets, it could also have been called a spitoon.
