BBC Telling Lives World War II Project

Post 1

Rachel Mee

I work for a BBC project called Telling Lives, and want to try and drum up some interest for two Public Presentations at the Conference Centre, at the City of Wolverhampton College's Pagett Road Campus, on Thursday March 18, at 2pm or 6.30pm.

We want to give people the chance to make their own film for the BBC, their own radio recording for the BBC, or their own written item for the BBC. The best and simplest way to explain Telling Lives is that it is a chance to make a short film suitable for broadcast on BBC television, and on a BBC website. (www.bbc.co.uk/tellinglives) We are looking for people's stories of World War II, to co-incide with the 60th anniversary of D-Day in June. Each filmmaker will use their own personal photographs, siouvenirs, or even bits of film, - and each particiapnt will have editorial control of their own story - but we will provide lots of help writing a script and creating the film on a laptop computer, during a workshop near the conference centre in April.
All this is free, in a relaxed group setting, no previous experience of writing or computing is required. Each storyteller gets a copy of all the films made, on video tape and on CD. It is extremely rewarding for all - a chance to let the world know about your wartime memories. All you need to give up is just over four days of your time. Better still, at these workshops there is also the chance to make your story for BBC radio and for the BBC WW2 People's Website. Only one or two days need be given up for these particular options, and again, storytelling help will be given in a group setting. No-one is left to sink or swim - and we have taught everyone from a twelve-year-old to a ninety-five year old.
The stories we are after can be anything related to World War II. Armed forces, a nurse, an evacuee, a conscientious objector, a factory worker, a relative of someone who was one of these, a childhood spent in the Blitz - or one of the many other things I have not listed. However, stories related to D-Day will need to be included in the whole, as there is a BBC D-Day anniversary theme in June.
