Belatedly I have picked up your useful information about the "pheasant" which was the subject of a story told to me by my late father in law Frederick Penlington (Regimental Sargeant Major 8th Irish Hussars).
Can you confirm that the munitions being tested at that time were infact code named the beak?.
Fred was originally a mounted cavalry trooper and was stationed in Palestine at the time the regiment was "mechanised" describing with some feeling the fact that the troopers had to shoot their own horses because the army were not prepared to sell them to the locals and transporting them back to the UK was out of the question.
Any clues as to how we might gain more knowledge of Freds service record?
My email is [email protected], if this is of use.
Thanks
Dave Ettie
