When I go into "edit" the article is as I put it in with all the paragraphs intact but none of the code the remainder of thetitles, photo etc have.
Of course adding extra lines to the paragraphs as you suggest makes no difference (I don't understand why you would think this would do anything )- this too needs the codes and I don't understand how to use them. We can't all know about them - one would have to read a proper chapter explaining exactly how to use each command (<>etc)!
I tried to look at the codes in the titles section but I clearly was doing it wrong as it told me it was wrong.

Dear David
We seem to be singing from two different song sheets.
When I look at any of my own articles and click on EDIT it takes me into an EDITING mode.
With the cursor blinking at the end of any word I can then hit RETURN which opens up a new PARA.
The URLS or codes don't come into it at all at this stage.
I have submitted roughly 70 articles to date without the problems you mention and am frankly baffled.
Might I suggest that you ask Peter G to point you in the right direction ?

Dear David
Ron has asked me to take a look, but there is nothing I can add to his explanation. Codes don't come into it, just go into 'edit' mode (by clicking either 'Edit Article' or 'Basic Edit) and type away or, in your case, place the cursor at the end of a paragraph, after the full stop, and press enter. Exactly as you do in any text editor.
It is always best to then click 'Preview' as a final check. Although I have contributed a lot to this website I still use Preview every time.
You can go into Preview as many times as you like, making final adjustments.
If all is to your satisfaction, click 'Post Message'.
Peter
