Thanks for the greeting, old buddy. Here's one for you - I
think you should be able to work it out for yourself, but if you

Not bad for my age, as it appens. Posted Dec 31, 2003
Dear Gordon (I presume)
I am contacting you via an internet cafe (something quite exotic for my neighbourhood) as practically everything I own is boxed to clear the way for the parqueteros - the wooden floors are being resurfaced. Therefore I have been unable to fully decipher your message, and don't really have the time to compose a decent letter. But, 1.5 euros buys an hour on the internet, so I might as well use the time to express a few thoughts.
Let me congratulate you, first, on your note; you came up with some good combinations. I hope you found the experience interesting, at least.
As to our, shall we say, difference of opinion, I must accept that it's an argument I simply cannot win; after all, the way you play (sometimes) is not against the letter of The Rule - and it is only a game, isn't it?
Lacking both facial and verbal cues, the written word has always been open to misinterpretation; internet interaction seems to amplify the smallest doubt and often leads to the communication of unconsidered or illconsidered ideas.
The day we shouted at each other, I must tell you, did not stir my anger, as it seemed to yours. I called you 'Tosh' with a smile on my face, expecting you to picture John Clease and the Dead Parrot Sketch!
You have, on at least 2 occasions, questioned my maturity; I think what you mean is that I can be childish, and that is surely true of us all.
I'm probably a fair few years older than you, way past caring if others consider me immature - so if you do want to insult me, you'll have to think of something else.
But back to the game...and your note. I didn't need Scrabble tiles to read your first sentence..."your best ignored.." - how could you know that I had been fiddling around with anagrams long before I spotted H2G2, so I have quite a stock of little gems - and in any event, if I want to display them, I need only list say 100 of them and post them all at once (what a clever boy..etc); why should I care if they are solved or not? Frankly, the real pleasure is in the finding.
My main grievance: most of the time, setting is surprisingly easy...think of a word...check the spelling (more carefully these days)
...draw the tiles and in more than 50% of cases (of the words I choose)
something usable jumps out within moments. It is not always so. Sometimes, I select a word within which I find a myriad of possible permutations...further, I attempt to disguise it with a wordlet copmbination, which may well not be the most amusing...and post the anagram. The process may take 20 or 30 minutes, or more (for 1 word).
To see somebody knock off one of these words, in little more than the time it takes to post, is more than galling. This week, one of our little group was able to provide two 9 or 10 (I don't remember which)
letter words almost immediately - THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE without the aid of a computer solver! BUT, there is no rule against that either. So, where are we going? A thread for the speed merchants? Is it just a race?
Finally, as I'm beginning to doubt whether there will be time to type this, 'FILMING LOG RANT' is so far unsolved...unless you mean one of the following: MORTAL FLINGING, which does have me worried, or
FORMAL TINGLING, which intrigues me no end.
Shall we stick with the formal tingling?
Regards & all the best for 04

Pity I was totally disconnected when the correction arrived - still,
I amused myself discovering the following, drawn from the original:
Naming loft girl. Gin fling, mortal. Tillman forging. Grilling 'fantom'. Lilting frogman. Formal glinting. Tingling for Mal. Forming tall gin. Lifting long ram. Montaging frill. Trolling figman. Rolling gift man. Grafting in Moll. Mort falling - (Gin!).
Rating long film. Art film longing. Lifting long arm. Filming long rat. Rolling mint fag. Logman flirting. Long girl, fit man. Fling girl to man. Fling girl on mat. Flaming ring lot. Girl lifting man.
Tall frog mining. Till frog naming.....

Sole can you please post your solved word and new letters on the same post... there is perfectly good reason for asking this as digibox users are having a particularly bad time just now trying to move around the site and having to make your way there twice for one word is not really fair... it is written in the rules at the top of the page..

yes but it takes ages to get there... and anyway there is not quite the same urgency to post as there's more to choose from... and if somebody does beat you to the post you still have your prepared word for next time..

Rudest Elf Posted Jan 7, 2004
And then again, if you're pipped to the post, your prepared word will already have slipped out, no?

then you mean a simulpost, I did mean that if you arrived to post and it had already been posted.. a simpulpost happens all over the site and nothing can be done about it.. i'm sure you have plenty of words so it shouldn't be a problem and of course, it is the same for everyone..

Testing to see how I react to flattery, eh? Well, it makes me feel uneasy, particularly now that I'm used to you shouting at me.... I know, it's the old coppers' 'nice lady, nasty man' ploy (or vice versa)...let's see how it goes....I see confusion ahead.
By the way, what have you against hyphenated words?
Howzitgawn Arty
Artisan Posted Jan 7, 2004
Oh why doesnt this surprise me.I have no ulterior motive in flattering you believe me.There should be no confusion if you abide by the rules, and I think technically hyphenated words are TWO words
Its much less confusing if the answers are one word answers.
Howzitgawn Arty
Rudest Elf Posted Jan 7, 2004
It's pointless arguing, but a hyphenated word IS a word.

Well at least we're straight on that count.I may just put that question up for grabs on <./>Askh2g2</.> as I'm positive some educated persons will put us all right!
Furthermore may I add that on any occasion that I have been nasty to you I felt I was justified. It stops here!If you dont like the way things work here then stick to the 9 and 10's as usual.Thats all I have to say on the matter.
Regards,
G
