What I also want to know is: what's so damn good about digital cable? Eh? I'm supposed to be watching Red Dwarf right now, discovering how Lister talks a virus he's been infected with out of killing him- instead, I'm sitting here looking at a screen full of unsynched digital squares (worse than real-video movies at 33.6!). Did good old analog cable do this? NEVER! It was always up, and always came through clear and clean like broadcast tee-vee, but with more channels. Now, with digital cable, we get LAG, fer chrissake, with our tee-vee.
Now I can see numerous ways in which digital benefits the cable companies- even beyond the 25 bux extra they charge for digital service- but I'm damned if I can see anything beyond the Sci-Fi channel and BBCA and a few other channels they carry ONLY in digital format (which leads me to belive we are being baited and coerced into purchasing this dubious service, via the said channels) which we as consumers gain from it.
Death to digital cable!

hehe!! i'm glad those little digital squares aren't just on my tv set i so love (note sarcasm here) being in the middle of a great program i've been waiting weeks to see only to have it messed up by constantly throwing those blasted squares all over my screen. you can still here them talking but the screen freezes while these darn squares invade my screen. you'd think that progress would mean better but this is just one instance that proves if it ain't broke don't fix it

another digital tv horror tale...mark happened to turn the tv on at just the right time to pick up their weekly test thingy. what this does is put some sort of a funky noise on your set so that you can't hear anything else and then the words across the top telling you about the test. it said it would last for an hour but after the hour was up and it was still going i called to see when it would end. now the answer to my question should have been placed at the top of the screen with the test thingy...turn the set off and on again to get it to stop, this way you can't tell the test is going on. never had this problem before but mark just happened to turn it on at the perfect time to catch the blasted thing. felt a bit stupid once i discovered how to fix it but then i got to thinking that the digital cable folks should, with all their technology, have a way of doing this darn test without messing up a tv set.

Well, we get the "test" thingy, too- but it doesn't do anything but give you a green screen for about 30 seconds with the notice that the EBS test is going on, and the annoying voice-over (obviously done by someone with the IQ of Gomer Pyle, but without his broadcast talents). It doesn't screw up the tee-vee, but it always happens at some key moment in whatever movie or television show you happen to be watching at the time. I would kill for just a little message at the top of the screen, and no voice-over!
I did, however, discover ONE good thing about digital cable this weekend at my sister's house. Seems when you have a properly working digital service, you can order PPV movies and events just by clicking a few buttons onscreen. Very nifty!
Of course, down here in the boonies, you click on all those buttons and you get a phone number you have to dial in order to get the movie/event- which nine times out of ten the clueless people at the office don't know how to set you up with anyway. *sigh*
Oh well- the things I go through for the sci-fi channel and BBC!

we tried the ppv thingy but because we have 4 tv's connected to the cable the signal isn't strong enough to connect so we are stuck with either the video store down the road or purchasing a dvd to watch

You could do that "net flix" thingie. My bro-in-law uses that, and gets unlimited time video-rentals for real cheap! 'Course, you've got to wait for the US Postal Service (hahahahaha!) to bring 'em to ya, but it's pretty convient.
