Hi Omy,
Lovely country Scotland - we go there every year with our touring caravan. Whereabouts were you? And were the midges still about? They came early this year - greenhouse effect I suppose!
Where's his Lordship these days - lost interest now he got his ?

We went to Arran... beautiful island! there are some photos kicking about the internet somewhere..... werernt too many midges where we were working luckily... although I normally dont get bitten too much... must taste nasty or summin... maybe all the have made my blood too sugary 4 em!
Mild summer meant a lot of natural stuff got shifted forwards.... will be bad on the birds & little beasties
if we have a harsh winter cuz all crops & berries ripened early..... *turns off zoologist mode*

Hi Omy,
Haven't been to Arran I'm afraid. Spend most of our time up there on the West coast at a little hamlet called Laide on Gruinard Bay looking out over the summer isles. It's between Gairloch and Ullapool.
I feel sorry for the birds - they've been eating the berries in my back garden already - guess a lot of them will starve this winter unless we feed them plenty. Are you studying zoology? I gather you were working up there!

Ooooh, Ive been to Gairloch! Ages ago tho when i was little.
Beautiful place Scotland.
Good guess, I am doing zoology, its really interesting.... mainly....
I was on Arran with uni conservation group... we were doing voluntary work up there (free accomadation tho ) twas rhododendron clearance & footpath maintainence type work.... good fun.

Hi Omy,
Glad you enjoyed Scotland - I love the place, especially up the West coast.
Guess rhododendron are a troublesome weed up there though - good of you to do voluntary work clearing it and repairing paths. When we go it's for the scenery and the walking but we avoid July/August because of the midges which just love my wife and eat her to bits.
We didn't get there this Autumn because my daughter and family were using the caravan, and now it's laid up for winter.
Are you back at university studying then? And are you doing a degree in zoology? I just know you from swimming in a pool of toffee looking for apples!!!

Hi Omy and greetings my lord(and welcome back)
I'm back from sister-in-laws and still sane and reasonably sensible.
Busy Busy Busy ??? since I retired I don't know how I found the time to go to work !!! Glad I'm not at your end of a working life Omy but stick with the exams - it's worth all the effort - I never failed an exam in my life and I'm too old to start now !
Looked at your personal page Omy and noted the remark that you missed Jazz when I was off line for ages - how lovely of you.
Keep in touch

Commiserations Omy - I know all the trials you are facing - found calculating the bending of beams under loading (by calculus) a real frazzle - never had to do it since I qualified. lol.
Stick with it love

bending beams.. without going back to check did i mention i was doing that prac few weeks ago or was there some strange psycic link going on?!
wasnt tooo hard... got given equtions & just had to number crunch em.... infact i still havent finished doing that :s... oh pants.
just finished the evil write up... thankfully (not the bending one... this is on osmoregulation in Arenicola - a polychaete worm)
Anyway, more cheerful matters... whats up with u guys then?

Why on earth would a zoologist study bending moments? lol weird and wonderful are the ways of the world! As a practicing Civil Engineer for the last 60 years I've only twice had to use the formulae and never even remembered how they were proved. Ah well.
I am busy at the moment doing some road design for an architect friend which keeps me out of trouble - and I teach calligraphy one evening a week at the local school.
Leaves a little time for h2g2.

I doing a biophysics unit.... looking at how physical laws can be applied to plant systems (ok, its a botony nit zoology units.. but thats allowed). It's reminding me how much I miss physics from school... used to be one of those weird kids who loved all the sciences... and maths! lol

I loved physics amd maths but could never get away much with chemistry.
Never understood valencies and my equations may have balanced but they could never be reproduced in a lab.
We didn't do biology (except behind the bicycle sheds) and I got 9% for latin at the end of my 3rd year.
