When the S*** hits the proverbial

Crossness pumping station, on the South bank of the Thames, a few miles east of Royal Greenwich but within the London Borough of Greenwich,(had an Open day in July), It has a non working but largely intact Victorian Pump House.
This has very ornate and colourful iron work as well as relatively interesting outside archetecture. You can see some photographs and info at
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~cg02/crossness/
This short entry is another example of Life on the Line by a Greenwich resident/worker

Near the Line

Recently we visited Downe House, Kent UK - Long time home of Charles Darwin, author of Origin of Species. The complete text of this and several of his other works are available on the net.
Another bit of local excitement was the Navy Cruiser HMS Belfast being towed down the Thames from her usual mooring at Tower Bridge, to end up in Portsmouth for hull repairs and painting. On route she passed through greenwich Reach and the Thames Barier at Charlton in Greenwich Borough

Belsast at the Barrier
In this photo you see not only The Barrier and the Belfast but also in the background three more notable sights - Canary Wharf tower, the cantilever masts of the Millenium Dome and Peninsula Gasometer.
