crash and burn
Posted Jul 3, 1999
There were no DIRECT legal problem with QuadBee.. yet. I could smell them on the wind. I was asked to remove a reference to QuadBee as being the apocryphal sixth book in the trilogy. I took offense to that. I had gone out of my way to insure it was clear this was not officially endorsed by Douglas Adams, but my efforts were not enough.
Saying I couldn't refer to QuadBee as the apocryphal sixth book in the trilogy was like saying you can tell the joke but not the punchline. I mean that was the entire PREMISE of the idea. Without that the project was nothing.
I saw no reason to drag out the inevitable and see what else we would later be told was unacceptable. If anyone else wants to have at it and do a better job than I can, you're welcome to try. QuadBee was never mine. Technically it's TDV/DNA property. I had hoped it would become "ours" in a nonlegal sense; a place for ideas to miss the ground and learn how to fly.
If you want to fight The Powers That Be you're more than welcome to, and good luck. I didn't come here to pick a fight.
I came here to write. Dammit.

State of QuadBee

Well Jim Lynn has so far been unable to verify for certain whether or not DNA's lawyers think there's a problem with it. He basically said to continue on with the understanding that we can be deleted without warning at any time. So I'm saying the heck with it. Let's go forward. I welcome any and all input regarding all this. Well except from that one guy. He's starting to get on my nerves. *smirk*

second thoughts

I'd like your opinions regarding all this. My creativity has gone into a sort of 'Devil's Advocate' mode. I mean when I started this thing, I thought the idea of making the human race evicted from Earth rather than destroying it would be a pretty neat idea. I also thought writing the major characters from previous books into the background and asking people to focus on the lesser-known characters or characters of their own imagination would be a pretty neat idea too.
Furthermore, I thought the idea of eventually having everyone meet up somewhere at the Big Bang Burger Bar would be a neat idea too. It was a nice sounding place that Douglas Adams never got around to actually using.
However, the more I think about it, the more I realize we're going way off the deep end here. I mean the stories aren't really sounding anything like an actual Hitch Hiker's Guide. I mean without the smoking remains of the Earth and Arthur wandering around with that blank look on his face as he and his aquaintences tumble haphazardly into a sun or running away from ravenous bug bladder beasts or what-not.. I mean, what is it all about? What are we in fact doing?
Should I scrap it all and start over or is this really a more hoopy idea than I'm aware of and I should just go have a lie down somewhere?

This is gonna get real big real fast. People aren't just writing chapters. We're getting the makings of completely stand alone stories here! Wow! Great! Froody! I mean, ZARQUON how do I fit all this into one book?
I may have to re-evaluate. "Tales from" QuadBee might literally be that. This may not be just the sixth book, but an anthology of stories that accumulatively make up one book.
And if we do that? Guess what? Continuity won't be as important which means I won't have to feel like a den mother. IF we go this route, you can do pretty much whatever you want and it won't affect other people's stories because we can say they're all alternate realities.
Of course you'd still have to work the Big Bang Burger Bar into it somewhere, so it still gibes with the original project.
I'm still brainstorming. Could use a little more greymatter. What do y'all think?

I've decided to try and use this place as an experiment in creative writing for any and all h2g2 fans who wish to participate. We're going to start with Max Quordlepleen and the Big Bang Burger Bar and see where it'll go from there.
