Not relevant to me, I'm afraid. Type 2 Diabetes is where the body produces insufficient insulin to balance out the level of sugar in the blood. I suffer from type 1 Diabetes, where my body produces *no* insulin, so chemicals that stimulate the production have no effect.

Here comes the science bit...

At some point in my youth around age 14, I was infected with a virus called Cocksaki B4 (sp?) - a variant of the common cold. Because of a genetic flaw, instead of producing antibodies to attack the virus, my body produced mutated antibodies that attacked the cells in my pancreas, known as the "Islets of Langerhans", where insulin is produced, killing them all off. As with all immune responses of this nature, once the antibody is in my blood I'm permanently "immune" to my own insulin producing cells, whick are continuously killed off as my body tries to regenerate them. smiley - scientistsmiley - puff

So, in theory, the only cure for type 1 Diabetes is AIDS... smiley - blue

smiley - yikes Hereditary pancreatitis? Which genetic flaw causes that?

Sorry, I confuse Type 1 and Type 2 the same way as Regions 1 and 2...
Why can't they just give them different names? (tho come to think of it left and right sound reasonably different smiley - erm)

But wouldn't lizard spit be a wonderful answer to be able to give to people who ask what you're on? smiley - evilgrin

(btw, how can I get this thing to display the Greek letter alpha? I tried Character Map but all it did was α )

I don't think you shoul try AIDS. I've heard the side effects are even worse than the ones you get from NSAIDs. smiley - winkeye

It's not hereditary pancreitis, it's type 1 Diabetes! Almost 25 years ago now I had to study the mechanisms that caused it for an exam., and that's pretty much it. The body has a genetic flaw that makes the immune system misfire. smiley - doctor

All the "complications" are the smiley - yukky part.

Key: Complain about this post
