My pal Hazel paid me a visit this afternoon. 
It was just supposed to be a flying visit, but she looked into my kitchen, then rolled up her sleeves and started cleaning! 
As she said, after she had seen it she wouldn't have been able to just leave it like that "without having nightmares". 
She took out several sacks of rubbish, cleaned out the slow cooker (!) and washed a load of dishes. The upshot is that I now have enough clear space to get through and do all the other stuff I need to do, e.g. I just got a load of washing through the machine and it's now tumble drying. 
So, thank you, Hazel! You're a life saver! 
I watched "Elementary", "Justified", "Jonathan Creek" and I'm about to watch "Suits" and "The Tomorrow People" before I crash.
