You are spot on. However, it is assumed by many universitys that the phrase "potter" is synonomous to "artist". In fact, one Uni I applied to seemd quite shocked that I wanted to join their course without taking an art & design course first. Actually most potters make usable pots (dinnerware etc) because that's what sells, at least until you have been doing it for thirty years and become famous, when you can make whatever you want and call it "abstract" or something. Well having lived in Stoke on trent for 5 years on and off (universitys etc) I could give you several descriptions of what potters do. but in the interests of decency I'll keep this clean(ish)Potters is the name often used to describle the locals who live around Stoke on Trent by the students from Keele and University of Stafford. The word 'duck' springs inevertably to mind, at least it does to 'potters' lips whenever they greet anyone.(This is weird when you first hear it believe me ). So there you have it, potters live in Stoke.
