Nuts in October
Posted Oct 17, 2007
I went for my usual visit to Arne, the rut is on and i always wanted to have a picture of the stags clashing horns.Yet again i was unlucky, the battle seemed to have been fought and won. There were notices everywhere about aggressive stags, and i came across a few of them.
I got to Arne before it was quite light and trundled off in the usual direction,it seemed bleak and so different from when i was last there, what was worse,i could not see a single deer or another human being.I was cold and grumpy so went back to the car for a cuppa and a re-think.It was light by then and thats when i spotted the notice. The part i was walking in was off limits for some heath management.I decided to have another try as i could hear the eerie screams of the deer.As i walked through the sweet chestnut grove,i was bombarded by some squirrels hurling chestnut husks to the ground.I stupidly chucked a stick at them which only brought more sharp husks raining down on my head.I scarpered out of there before i ended up with a fractured skull and that was when i was confronted by a large and very grumpy stag.I stood my ground and took a picture of him and the flash made him change his mind about attacking me.It was when i got a bit further along the path,i spotted the biggest stag i have ever seen,he was in a field with loads of females. No wonder the other stags were fed up,they would have no chance against him and neither would i,i thought,as he came galloping towards me.I had had enough lucky escapes for one day so i headed off for Studland and the ferry home.
I may go back next week, you never know, one of the other stags may fancy his chances to take the crown, but i doubt it.http://www.flickr.com/photos/sue980/ I hope you like the pictures, they are in the file, sika deer

Nuts in May
Posted May 13, 2006
I dont know who wrote "here we go gathering nuts in may"but they were 1 nut short of a frosty morning. It is May,but it is neither cold or frosty, and there arn't any nuts.It could have been written by the Dr.who carries out vasectomies i suppose?
To get back to the point of this entry,at this time of year there are so many nice things to eat just lying about countryside.Just pick your own,and its free!Ramsoms or wild garlic is at its best,st.george mushrooms.hop shoots and dandilions.Jack by the hedge makes a lovely alternative to mint sauce.
Coming soon...Elderflower,samfire,shaggy cap mushroom and lime flowers.
My favourite job for this month has been making Beech leaf Noyau.Take a glass or earthenware jar, pack tightly with young beech leaves, cover with gin, leave to soak for a couple of weeks.Strain the liquid,it should be bright green by now, then for every pint of gin,add 350grms.of sugar desolved in half a pint of boiling water and a liberal slug of brandy, mix well and bottle when cold. This drink is a bit moreish and you could end up
