Well, I looked online and I couldn't find the reference. What phrase was it? I didn't visit that site when looking for Mountain region info...

So sorry! When I looked for the sentence I thought I'd found a match for, I couldn't find it.
Must have been one or two similar phrases I suppose. I only checked because your own style seemed less formal, more idiosyncratic. These pieces seemed more 'guide book' style.

I tend to be less formal in the general paragraphs, but in the regions I have to be thorough, with possibly sprinkles of humor and experience in each region. This informal style is totally out of my range, apparently H2G2 is the only article sight where my jokes were...laughable?!

Sorry I didn't reply earlier - I've been on holiday for a fortnight.
I think you're right. It's hard to write an article that is, at once, factual and written in an entertaining manner.
Some articles are so packed with facts they become turgid and unreadable. Some try so hard to be funny or original they say more about the writer than the subject matter.
I suppose it's partly a question of choosing a manageable subject. It's going to be easier to write about some quirky tradition than the history of the Second World War, for example. (Dmitri's very good at writing articles that illuminate corners of history.)
Then there's the question of how much detail to include. As a would-be writer of fiction and poetry, I look for details that readers can identify with. When I was writing about Brighton (Brighton and Hove - City by the Sea - A87752190) I came across the detail that the Prince Regent used to hold dinners of up to 70 courses. No wonder he was so fat!

Haha, there was a movie directed by Mel Brooks called History of the world part 1, where Julius Ceasar was portrayed as being a fat, womanizing slob--and to make things worse, the philosopher called to the palace started telling fat jokes
