Just realised your U number is only a hop-skip and jump away from mine. We must have joined within minutes of each other.

And we were born in the same year.

If you ever want to pop by for a bottle of milk, I mean smiley - stout, feel free!

I suppose it's about time I replied.

Hello.

I think I joined H2G2 when it was not hosted at bbc.co.uk, following a post at Slashdot, where I also have a ridiculously low user ID (current user ID's at slashdot are in the millions, and they do not muck about by adding a check-digit on the end of the number (so there is a user 1, user 2, and a user 7893, which is me, etc. whereas in H2G2 consecutive user ID's run user 30753, 30761, 3077x (I didn't bother to find out the 'x').

A ridiculously low user ID on slashdot does get me moderator access virtually every week smiley - smiley

There's me trying to work out if you have some exotic device measuring author ages, but of course I have put that on the home page.

As for the offer of Guiness, at the moment, I have not got enough free time to get much further than the BT Club in Cosham, but we have atleast started serving real ale in there, which is not going my liver much good. Now that all of the Guiness sold in the UK is allegedly brewed in Dublin, I can't say that I can taste the difference. I suspect they put some dishwater in it as it leaves the country, because Dublin guiness definitely tastes different to UK-sold-alleged-dublin guiness. Draught Beamish has that 'dublin' taste to it, when it's properly served, which is rare in the UK.

However, I've always wanted to plod around southern Ireland, and in the event of sufficient funds, and sufficient time, I definitely need to discover Eire. My fathers side of the family hails from somewhere down there, so there seems to be something pulling me towards Ireland.

Travel is another matter; being car-less, rail travel is ludicrously expensive; Living in Portsmouth, I can probably get two ferry journeys to Le Harve, and then back via Irish ferries (if they still do a route to Le Harve) for less than it would cost me to get a cheap day return to London.

Anyway, I seem to be rabbiting on, and it's getting late, so you'll be relieved to hear that I'll be shutting up now.

Jim
