What sort of Linux help are you after?
If it gets too RedHat specific, I'm unlikely to be a great deal of help. We (Prosig) made our own distribution many moons ago based on Slackware, and it's been going it's own way ever since. That doesn't mean there's a lot of common ground, but when it comes to RPM's, PAM, and all that other Redhatty stuff, I've got about as much clue as Cluseau. I'm into kernels, programming, shells, and quite horrible low-level C stuff that nobody else here likes to do (which is mainly bit shifting and linked lists/queues etc.)

It's largely to do with running slackware (zip) on an old 486, 90Mhz, along side win 95.
Is it practical as the slackware site implied it would run fine without partioning my (500mb) hard drive, and I just get kernel panic when booting?
Can u help on this?

The first thing that comes to mind is whether your kernel has the right root device flags (or root= argument on the kernel command line)
Are you loading with LILO, or loadlin, or some other method.
Remember that ZIP disks are generally pre-formatted to have a single partition which for some esoteric reason is partition 4, so the root device would be something like /dev/hdc4
What kernel panic are you getting. I'm assuming that at this stage it's panicing because it can't mount the root fs, or can't locate 'init'.
