(with help from BT )
The show is worth a visit, shame today's the last day.
Lots of stuff to see and freebies to gather.
Short entry as I can't really tie up this terminal for long
(But longer that if I'd tried to enter it by WAP!)
Neil.

Micro Skate Scooters are tiring!
Posted May 24, 2000
So, a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to have a go on a Micro Skate Scooter (http://www.micro-mobility.com - it's in Swiss and/or German, be warned) - what an absolute blast!
Something that needs to be bourne in mind is that I have an appalling sense of balance, I never mastered remaining upright on a skateboard and always ended up on my backside on roller skates. The very thought of inline skates gives me the willies
But the Micro I could cope with. I managed to remain upright the entire time and actually quite enjoyed it. So much so I vowed to get one.
There not cheap though (£100 in the Gadget Shop), but what the heck, you only live once (more on that below). So armed with plastic I did the deed last Sunday.
Unfortunately other commitments and the weather conspired to keep me from having a go until this lunchtime. The sun was out, I need to pop to the shops to do some stuff, so thought "Why not!" and ventured off on the scooter.
The pavements around here are *not* smooth, not in the slightest. It was a very bumpy ride into town and when I finally stopped it hit me exactly how knackered I was. I am officialy unfit But it was fun.
So here I am, back in my office, trying (quietly) to recover. I'm not too sure I'll be making the journey to the shops again anytime soon but the scooter will definitely be living in the boot of the car and if I come across a stretch of smooth tarmac..... wheeeee!!!
To those who ask, I'm describing the scooter as my latest way to kill my self - "If I don't end up coming off and falling under a bus, the heart attack's going to get me!"
If you get a chance to have a go on one, take it up. Even if you don't end up wanting one I promise you'll enjoy yourself.

A semi sensible entry
Posted May 16, 2000
Okay, so I've had two goes at creating journal entries via WAP, neither of which I would call a resounding success. I thought it was about time I put together a more complete entry.
Is WAP a great white elephant? I don't think so, but I don't think it is yet being used for the right things. Text entry is definitely not a good idea. The currently running BT Cellnet tv ad of a girl doing her email on a 7110 is a joke. It's hard enough trying to use a Palm with a WAP browser let alone a phone. You might just manage with a Nokia Communicator or a WAP enabled Psion (or other keyboarded device) but not much else. Check your email by all means, but forget about replying. Same thing realy applies to discussion groups as well.
Where WAP is going to win is with geographically relevant data, restaurant listing based on where you are, that kind of stuff or useful, concise, information. The guide has great potential but 3000 word entries on a mobile phone screen, even the nice one on the 7110, have potential to be painful. Two or three screens is probably the upper limit (at least that's mine anyway).
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big believer in this stuff and want it to succeed. I can see great potential when technologies like Bluetooth start to take hold and when higher capacity mobile bandwith becomes more common.
It's going to be an interesting journey and I for one, am ready for the trip.
Neil.
