Message for you, sir!
Dizzy H. Muffin Started conversation Aug 3, 2000
Hi, it's me. I'm the one who has four different characters in the H2G2 Caves RPG-type thungummy.
Could you include a side-quest type thing in it? Specifically, I want there to be six different opportunities for Link to learn songs to play on his ocarina (which he has brought along). He already knows two, but at the moment they won't be any use. Basically, the songs will mess with space-time, by either teleporting everyone somewhere or by changing where, chronologically, we are. (Hopefully, none of the elsewhens are before the caves were created.)
If you don't want to do it, I'll understand.

Well... I already have a campaign laid out. I also know exactly what ability scores each of you have. *evil grin* Yes, your side campaign is laid in but the main quest will take precedence. Do you have any AD&D stuff? It may be useful since I am playing by those rule.

Dizzy H. Muffin Posted Aug 4, 2000
No. I haven't the first idea as to what AD&D is.
So the ocarina side-quest is a yes? If so, here's the list songs. I've created MIDI files and put them up on my Web Bit; I'll post the URL's of each song when he plays them.
=Zelda's Lullaby - fixes shattered things, such as signs and other ocarinas. Link already knows it.
=Saria's Song - allows Link to communicate telepathically with his friend Saria, whom I intend to appear at some point. (You can choose the place for yourself. Mention rafters in the description of the room, and possibly a green haze.)
=Song of the Sun - Changes day to night and night to day. We can omit this if day and night aren't important.
=Song of Storms - Starts a thunderstorm in whatever area we're in, even if it's inside.
=Bolero of Fire - Creates a red glow, lighting things up if we're in darkness.
=Prelude of Light - Link grows seven years in either direction, depending on whether at the time he is 10 or 17. I'll handle description of that. Link already knows it.
=Minuet of Forest - Teleports everyone to the room that Saria was in when we found her.
=Requiem of Spirit - Learned at the same time as the Nocturne of Shadow.
=Nocturne of Shadow - Teleports everyone to the room that the Requiem of Spirit was played in. Learned at the same time as the Requiem of Spirit.
=The Song of Time - The effect of this song should have something to do with time or temporal distortions. Choose for yourself what it is, but don't tell me. I want SOMETHING to surprise me!
Link already knows the Prelude of Light and Zelda's Lullaby. Actually, he knows all of them, but he wants to know what the effects are before he plays them, just in case something may have disasterous effects if he plays one of them at the wrong time.

Its a yes but...
Ask before actually describing any of them (there may be other factors involved) and Link's official class is bard for when the rules are required.
I have a sheet here with all your character scores and I will use them, but I won't tell you what they are You have to learn about you abilities first hand.
The quest is in motion, begin!

Oh. Okay.
Well, Saria, when she appears, will drop from the rafters and land on Link, who greets her enthusiastically. Saria is surprised to see that Link is young again* and explains that she has been teleported forwards the thousand or so light years between Earth and Hylia and, apparently, backwards seven years, and that she may be able to help but doesn't exactly know how.
Here's a picture of Saria playing her Ocarina for Link. [Broken link removed by Moderator]It's at a web site called "Hyrule: The Land of Zelda."
As for the Prelude of Light ...
[A haze of blue light appears, twice as big as Link. What appears to be a temple fades into view in the haze, in the middle of which is a raised platform with a sword plunged into it. Link steps through the oval of light and joins the image of the temple. He places his hands around the blue hilt of the sword, pulls, and draws the great Master Sword from its pedestal in the Temple of Time. The image in the blue haze wavers, completely blurs, and re-focuses ... and out of the image steps Link, no longer a ten-year-old ocarinist ... but a seventeen-year-old warrior.]
And then I list Teen-Link's items; the Kokiri Sword is replaced by the Master Sword, the slingshot-and-Deku-Nuts is replaced by bow-and-arrows, the masks are omitted entirely, and Teen-Link is five-foot-nine. He is also a much better fighter than he was as a bard.
When he wants to get young again, he plays the Prelude of Light again.
[A haze of blue light appears, somewhat bigger than Teen-Link. The Temple of Time, with an empty pedestal in it, fades into view in the haze. Teen-Link steps through the oval of light and joins the image of the Temple. He draws the Master Sword, holds it up, and plunges it back into the pedestal. The image in the blue haze wavers, completely blurs, and re-focuses ... and out of the image steps Link, a ten-year-old ocarinist once again.]
[*Footnote: Saria is a Kokiri - they all appear to be ten- to twelve-year-old children, and they never grow up. Link was raised among them until he was ten and the game "Ocarina of Time" begins.]

Weird is my style. (And what's "scene setting"?)
Actually, I'll handle Saria's introduction and her letting Link in on "Saria's Song". You let me know it's the right room by describing rafters and a green haze.
And another thing: Link changes when he grows up or puts on one of the masks. You'll have to have four extra character scores.
Teen-Link is a warrior, not a bard, except inasmuch as he can play the Ocarina of Time. The Master Sword is a super-powerful weapon, and it can shoot sparks outward and there's a trick called the Whirling Blade technique: the name says it all. Also, he becomes excessively fast and acrobatic.
And as for the masks, Link stays a bard when he puts them on, even if his specie changes completely:
The Deku Mask transforms Link into a deku scrub: he is almost useless except for being really small and his sense of smell. He also has a sort of bagpipes.
The Goron Mask turns Link into a Goron, whose rock-hard skin makes up for his almost absolute lack of speed. He can also use bombs, which are a blast. The bongo drums he gets also make a boom.
The Mask of Zora, unless we need aquatic transport, will not be needed. His sharp fins make up for inability to use any swords. And he has the coolest fishbone-guitar this side of the H2G2.
[realizes something]
Say ... do you think you could have a tree growing up through the room Saria appears in?

A tree is pushing it in a cave... but a large column of tree shaped rock may be practical.

Dizzy H. Muffin Posted Aug 6, 2000
Okay. Let's say that at /first glance/ it looks like a tree.
Is "scene setting" anything special?
Message for you, sir!
Joe aka Arnia, Muse, Keeper, MathEd, Guru and Zen Cook (business is booming) Posted Aug 6, 2000
Yes... everything happenning at the moment is scene setting. I am describing the mood and putting the characters where they must go

Dizzy H. Muffin Posted Aug 6, 2000
Sounds good.
Do you have character scores for Link's other forms? (No, I'm not asking what they are)
Message for you, sir!
Joe aka Arnia, Muse, Keeper, MathEd, Guru and Zen Cook (business is booming) Posted Aug 6, 2000
No but I will set up some modifiers for the purpose rather than rolling whole new scores
Message for you, sir!
Dizzy H. Muffin Posted Aug 6, 2000
Here's some pointers
Deku - low everything, except a sense of smell
Goron - High attack/defense, miniscule speed
Zora - High speed, average attack, low-ish defense except fire-wise
Teen - Really fast, powerful weapons, average elf defense.

Confirmed.
Just so you'll know, the Hylian Shield can only counter physical attacks, such as arrows and swords. It can't deflect nonphysical entities like fire and ice. Conversely, the Mirror Shield works the other way around: it /can't/ counter physical attacks, and is only useful for countering nonphysical entities.

Fire and Ice are physical in this world...

Here are the details of your character backgrounds as I have worked out so far. Remember to act as you think these people would.
Link - your friend sent you a message asking for help, that they were in dire need of you. You are feeling very uneasy about this because you haven't been here for so long. People generally leave and forget the place.
YK - You are a spy for the despot of the river city down below. You were sent by him to report on the team's activities after the message from Link's friend was intercepted. You will not reveal yourself and will keep yourself back from any fighting. Other than that, play him like you imagine a hidden spy would act.
YC - Your background will be revealed later
Nerfal - ditto.
Please fill in as much of the character sheet as you can.

Dizzy H. Muffin Posted Aug 7, 2000
YC is a clone of Y2K, who is a clone of me. YC turned away from the path of evil, because he didn't like Y2K's attitude much. And Nerfal is a bounty hunter.
