Lochangel Posted Sep 9, 1999
Yes - sorry I put in an extra 'n' - it is called India Pale Ale because it was originally brewed for export out to India and other parts of the Empire as then was.

Mmmmmmmmm....your right Miss Loch, how come you have taken such an intrest in the stuff they call Ale?
Do you know why Porter's Ale is called Porter's?
Whatever you do, take pride!
Lochangel Posted Sep 9, 1999
Sid this is the story I choose to believe - I am not sure if it is true or just folklore. The drink came from a new method of brewing invented by Ralph Harwood, a brewer and pub landlord in east end in the early 18th century. Instead of producing different batches and strengths of ale from the same ingredients, he mixed them altogether and sold it under the name 'entire'. Because in the main his customers were porters from the local market's it became known as porter.

Sidney Kidney, AKA Gruby Ben, friend of Dirty Den Posted Sep 9, 1999
Right, the reason Porters was so popular was because it was the only guaranteed safe way of quenching your thirst without getting a water born disease, and it was cheap!!
Fermentation is a wonderful thing! Ahhhhh....
