Hello Sam. How long ago were you in Japan, and did you ever come across a pair of diminutive Japanese girls called Petty Booka who play ukelele songs and ukelele versions of pop songs (you should hear them do Blondie's 'The Tide is High' and Patsy Cline's 'I Fall to Pieces' )? They also get a lot of kudos from me for covering a Tom Waits song
They played for 45 minutes at the cd store where I work here in Austin last March at the annual South by Southwest music and film festival, and they brought the house down

Dear Gosho,
This is fabulous! Thank you very much. I never actually saw them myself, but you've inspired my interest. When I was out there (and that's about 8 years ago now) I was really into Cornelious who's subsequently become well know outside of Japan. I also really like a band called Boom Boom Satellites. One of my friends gave me an old punk tape of a band from Osaka called Laughing Nose - they were great, too. Thanks for the links.

Laughing Nose What a name for a band Almost as good as Morrisey's first band - Ed Banger and The Nosebleeds And I think I recall Peely playing the Boom Boom Satellites.
If you were there eight years ago, Petty Booka were prolly still in school. I don't know of Cornelius. I'll have to do a little research

I don't know if they've had any exposure in the UK yet, or even anywhere else in America other than SXSW... oh wait, they did go to NYC for a couple of shows after leaving Texas. I remember mentioning it to Shea.

Well I'll be mildly surprised. Mention Boom Boom Satellites or Cornelius to most people in Britain and you'll be labelled as wilfully obscure. Great stuff though - any other recommendations?
