I used to have an Olympus OM1 with 24mm wide angle, 50mm standard and 135mm telephoto lens.
It was a totally manual camera so I had total control over it. I got bored with taking pics so didn't use it for 10 years and realised I had left it in my parent's loft. It had got damp and full of mould! so I had to throw it away.
I was thinking of buying another camera just for holiday pics, but didn't really want to get into spending a load of money again, but had a look in a camera shop anyway. The owner said his son had an Olympus SLR all-in-one film camera that gave very good results and sharp pics.
I have had it now fora couple of years and am pleased with quality of pics, but don't like auto-focus as more difficult than manual cameras to do acurate focusing, don't like the fact that you can only do a limited amount of apature setting and only choose the fastest shutter speed and nothing else manually.
....but it was only £175 and has a 28-110mm lens so it is OK. When forced to digital, I will buy a camera that has manual overide for focusing, exposure, etc....I will also try to get one with a metal body as I hate the plastic they use these days as too light!

You certainly seem to know you stuff.
The wife has a digital camera, Kodak thingy, the pictures are ok but as you said it is rather basic and cant do a great deal with it, but its good for family snaps and bits like that, which is all she wanted it for really.
I have been looking for a new camera for myself, not just a family snap thingy (i'll leave that to the wife), I was looking at the Nikon F55?thread="smiley - erm" title="erm" class="smiley" src="http://www.h2g2.com/h2g2/skins/Alabaster/images/Smilies/f_erm.gif"/>

What some of the people on here seem to do is buy a digital camera, but get ordinary paper prints made from it at a chemist/camera shop as paper prints last longer than computer ones.
.
I will get a digital camera next as film cameras seem to be comeing to an end production wise. I don't really know that much, mainly about the OM1 I had, which being manual, meant I had to learn about f stops/shutter speeds as couldn't use it otherwise.
I don't know anything about digital cameras, but there is a thread on Ask H2g2 about digital cameras, and a little about film cameras where they maybe able to give digital help.
I just enjoy taking pics, mainly just take what I want, if other people like then then that is a bonus!
