Articles Entries on Japan

I'm glad to tell you that two Article Entries on Japan that I helped them to write a little bit were approved But to my regret, I found some misunderstandings, wrong phrase there... I pointed them out and told the h2g2 edotors. They kindly corrected them or reeditted. ************* To make them more better, I decided to write this journal and try to tell you what is fine and what is to re-edit. Also if I write this on my jouranl, not only writers but also my friends here can read these articles and will find what Japan is like I do hope this journal/thread will keep as long as possible. ************* These articles are http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A19617726 http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/A12590462 ********** I akso paste my message that I already posted below. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F75027?thread=3974223&pos http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F47997?thread=3974498&latest=1 these 2 are the same one. Lil, to paste this on editor's feedback http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F6543780?thread=3963826 This one is about our national flag. Kindly, the editor changed the picutre already, so that you can't see the old ones. But I found that lot of western people still misunderstand our present flag... lol no more imperial flags we have. only extreme right wing lads sometimes use this http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F6543780?thread=3953526 In this thread, someone discussed about chopsticks. This is also interesting for me to read. hahhahahaha. ******************* Well, as far as the 'dancing section', there are still misunderstandings. I think this section should be 'Japanese performance' instead of 'dancing', because 'Odori' means 'dance' in Japanese. Also, Kabuki is not a dancing, but a thatre... say Japanese musical/opera... kind of performance. it includes Japanese traditional dancing, but this isn't dancing... I think. Noh theatre as well. Noh is an origine of Kyogen or Kabuki in a sense. ****************** As I haven't read them all yet, I will read it carefully and leave my opinion on this thread. Although I'm not good at Japanese culture nor latest Japanese cultures... I'll do my best Hope everybody will enjoy this thread **************** I never ever thought that I tell you about Jap[an here btw I wonder if some of you have already watched the film, Hunnibal Rising . It's really strange one... The name of Lady, Murasaki Shikibu, is first female Japanese novelist and she wrote first NOVEL, in the world.. And the scene of using swords the lady explained about the 'Sekigahara's War (Osaka castle)'... but it's in about 1616 (the same year of Shakespeare's death... easy to remember) ... But Murasaki Shikibu lived in Heian Period hundred years before 1616 .. Also, the Lady Murasaki is played by CHINESE ACTRESS There are sooooooo many things like this. So, I won't watch Last Samurai nor Kill Bill. To me it's really strange. ************* Please join this thread, folks Thanks,

I'm off to work very soon, but I'll take a look at this after I get back. I'm sure I'll be able to handle the changes via EF or the Curators' page - I'll just have to make sense of them all first smiley - biggrin

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

The Last Samurai is worth a go... despite what the trailers, etc. imply Tom Cruise doesn't actually become a Samurai (I was initially put off because that's what I thought was going to happen), he merely takes their side.

In the article
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/A12590462
There is a 'The Diamyo' section, but this is misspelled.
It's the 'DAIMYO' not DIAMYO' smiley - rofl
Also, we don't say 'SAMURAI period', we may say 'BUSHI period' instead.
the word, "Samurai" is more popular than 'Bushi' in the other worlds, but it's only the word of the 'fighter' like Knight.
and the Daimyo System was established after Edo Period (1600)

As far as 'the Periods are concerned, Kamakura Period, Muromachi Period, Azuchi Momoyama Period, Edo Period are followed after Heian Period, and there was Meiji Period after Edo Period (Meiji restoration)
Also, if there is the HEIAN PERIOD in this article as Japan's history, why there isn't The NARA PERIOD in this article???? This is why most of people in the world think Kyoto was the first capital city in Japan instead of Nara smiley - groan
Should change this section.

Hi Mr Dreadful,
if you are not interested in it, you don't have to read it smiley - ok
Because I found it wrong on those articles, so I wanted editors to correct them.
I wrote this journal for pointing them out to mostly editors, and you can ignore this journal if you're not interested in smiley - winkeye
Anyway, I am really fed up with the wrong image that you, western people, have to SAMURAI as a JAPANESE. smiley - groan

I just need to explain something to you, Taamyu, as I think we're both confused in different ways here smiley - biggrin

There are two types of Entry in the Guide, there are Edited and Unedited Entries.

Unedited ones haven't been edited, obviously, so might contain errors, but this doesn't matter as much because they don't form part of the 'official' Guide. The best way to sort out errors on these is to contact the author.

Edited Guide Entries have been edited; they have gone through Peer Review, been edited by a Sub-editor and polished and accepted by the Editors. They are part of the official Guide, and can be found via search engines - not just through h2g2. So if there are errors in these, we need to know about them so we can correct them!

Of the three you have found errors on, only one is edited and part of the official guide, so I'll only be able to correct mistakes on that one. The Edited entries we have on general Japan are:

A19617726 - Japan for the Visitor
A663040 - A Brief History of Pre-Samurai Japan and the Rise of the Samurai Clans
A19617753 - Japan 2: Japan Today

If you find any mistakes on these, please let me know on this thread and I'll make sure they are sorted out for you! At the moment, I can't distinguish between mistakes you have found on edited Entries and mistakes you have found on Unedited ones smiley - headhurts But please let me know, as it's important that we get them addressed smiley - ok

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

Oh, it's not that I'm not interested... it's just a common theme with UK history that a lot of what we "know" is wrong, and I was using that as a basis for a comment that if we can't get our own history right, we probably won't get other people's history right either!

But yes, many people in the UK have a very incorrect view of Japanese culture, especially the historical aspects such as the Samurai.

The 'diamyo', as we misspell it, only appears on A12590462, which is an unedited entry, for example smiley - ok

But if you have a chance to watch Samurai film, I recommend "The Twilight Samurai/Tasogare Seibei (Seibei is a Samurai name of this film (hero))" You'll see what Samurai (lawer class) life is like. I rarely watch Japanese films, but this is bearable smiley - biggrin
