In truth they did get power-hungry, but if it hadn't been for Hitler and his Storm Troopers Germany would probably be a Third World country today if it even still existed. Why you ask? Well it's like this...
After World War One, Germany was in debt big time, Her economy was utterly wrecked, Her military was gone, Her weapons were depleted, Her population was dead, Her new government didn't work worth beans, and Her land was practically a lunar landscape.
Hitler and his policies saved the economy, rebuilt the military, restarted weapons production, restored the population, and (in a questionable manner) instituted a working government. He then (and you can't really blame him for this) took back the parts of Germany that the League of Nations divided in to other countries after WWI.
Granted Germany got wrecked again in WWII; the difference is that this time the Allies had learned their collective lesson and decided to NOT make Germany an enemy again. They also aided Germany in recovering, which they hadn't-and wouldn't have-done before.
There's a reason why some people even today have great respect for Hitler (and I'm one of them). Germans at the time compared him to Jesus Christ and then only because Jesus was the only other person who could come close to his greatness.
While Hitlers actions may have been ruthless, they were absolutely necessary to save Germany and restore Her to power. Nothing else would have worked.
