question about Agents of Shield

I gave up after 2 eps because I absolutely can't stnd the 2 idiotic baby-scientists who know everything (you think I'd be used to that by now). They really really make me want to throw things at the TV.
But I do love (his first name is) Agent Coulson - and want to know his story: is he just re-animated or is it something else? have they revealed that yet? and what about the older female agent? is it the same for her?
I really can't sit through those two idiots just to find out.

They're not idiots! They're charming! Actually they're my two favorite characters. But to answer your question....
The story behind Agent Coulson's resurrection hasn't been revealed yet, but there have been some hints. What I can tell you for sure is that the series definitely takes place after The Avengers and Agent Coulson definitely was stabbed through the chest. He supposedly "died" for eight seconds before being revived. Then he was sent to Tahiti for a couple months to recuperate. However....
I'm sure you noticed in the pilot episode that the doctor and some other lady were keeping a secret from him. Said secret extends beyond those two: supposedly Agent Coulson has a security clearance level that allows him to see, basically, everything. But when he requested information on his own recovery (which he presumably would have had access to), he was told that he didn't have the authority to see the file. Most suspicious.
Furthermore, every time someone (anyone) says "Tahiti", Agent Coulson responds with "It's a magical place."
Every. Single. Time.
It appears to be a programmed response. He's become aware of this, and I don't think he really believes he *was* in Tahiti. And yet he *does* have memory of it. Which of course begs the question, where did they come from?
My personal theory at the moment is that he's some kind of... simulant android... that's been implanted with the memories of Agent Coulson. Or his recovered spirit. Or something. And that his memories of Tahiti were artificially created and implanted before he was activated, or whatever. Possibly with the intention of protecting him psychologically.
The "older female agent" is Agent May. There's no indication that she ever "died" if that's what your wondering; just that she has a less-than-pleasant history. She forms the other half of the team's "muscle" along with Agent Ward (the hunky tough guy), who also has a less-than-pleasant history. You may or may not be interested to know that the actress who plays her also played Mulan in the Disney movie.
The first two episodes were easily the worst so far. It's been improving steadily. You may develop a better opinion of Fitz-Simmons (the know-it-all scientists) if you watch "Episode 6: F.Z.Z.T." It's still available on hulu if you want to check it out: http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/554209

Also...
Episode 7: "The Hub" is good for Agent Coulson: http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/557688
And despite a slow start, I think Episode 8: "The Well" is the best episode of the series so far: http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/560750

oh thanks for all that. I just can't handle this fake klutiness / incompetence. I used to be in military intelligence and it just doesn't wash. I know it's fantasy but... I just loathe it.
What I'm really worried about is that the films are going to wrap into the series too much and necessitate me having to watch those two. Bleuch.
Agent Coulson and Agent May (thanks for reminding me of her name) I could watch all day.

Ah, she features heavily in Episode 9: "Repairs": http://www.hulu.com/#!watch/564101
To be fair to Fitz-Simmons, they ARE lab rats with little-to-no field experience. You could hardly expect them to be shooting bullseyes with the best of 'em. If I understand your complaint correctly, which I may not.
