Is definately on it's way out now. Proof, from an interview with Jervis Johnson:

No, I won't be. I've left Warhammer and Warhammer 40,00 far behind now, though I'll still stick my oar in occasionally.

Rick is an alien. Seriously, he's been helping work on Warhammer Online, and occasionally contributing material for Warmaster.
So now we've replaced JJ and Rick Priestly with Andy "Shoot The Big Ones" Chambers (may the many daemons of poin'tistikk torment him forever) and Pete "I play Iron Warriors! They must be unbeatable!" Haines (may the players of the 8 other dread legions of Chaos rend him limb from limb).
And you wonder why it's been going downhill since 3rd Ed came out??

Recent white dwarf article. New chaos army.

Next big cheese of 40k when chambers picks up his p45 is phil kelly. If you want someone to cock up the game, hes your man.
The changes for 4th edition are pretty comedic actually
- Always rapid fire (even if moved) e.g. 2 shots at twelve if moved
- Tanks can fire all weapons with a strength 6 or less (making the exterminator very fast) even if they make a full move
- no assaulting from vehicles. The vehicle moves, the crew climb out next turn
- If you wound more models then what are in the unit, you can allocate your hits (so the firer can pick off specialists)
Its slowly dying lets face it. But i doubt GW will give up on it, so jervis will probibly be sent in to clean up for 5th edition.
But on the plus side, fantasy is turning pretty much all plastic. New chaos warriors (very gorgeous looking, go find now) are the newest, rumoured to be followed by dark elf corsairs, and a high elf unit. Theres plans for a plastic chariot, and there considering turning the knights plastic too.
BTW on the subject of fantasy, got my first dragon...
