Interesting, this could be very handy for historical and geographic entries.

How did you find your coordinates?

I tried playing in my working entry A87755755, I put in a link for 'Mariel' (this was the original template for my Entry now in Peer Review). I just used the google search function, you just have to replace all the '&' with '&' but I'm sure already knew that. I only put in the one link for now, the footnote still works!

I noticed your link to the Black sea was a rather small scale showing a large area, while most of the others were zoomed in on a small area, I only checked a few places.

Let me know your thoughts. I won't do anything publicly without hearing from you.

1 open googlemaps go to the place you want to mark.
2 place mouse pointer on the point you want to mark.
3 RIGHT CLICK on that point a dropdon menue appears choose option "WHATS HERE?"
4 A green arrow will be placed where you clicked and a map ref will appear in the search box at the top of the page.
5 cut n paste the ref into the text or link as required.

the size of nthe map conforms with the zoom you used if you zoom in on the mak uou will get a close up. if you wanthem to look the same set all maps to the same zoom setting. mylink is thus and seems robust Ravenna">http://maps.google.com/maps?q=44.471154,12.282858">Ravenna 44.471154,12.282858 replace this with your map ref Ravenna and replace this with your text Gnomon was king enough to send this link but I cant get to work perhaps you can. it is on this thread http://www.h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/brunel/F52852?thread=8300815&show=20&skip=0#pi12 ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://maps.google.com/maps?q=50.73...8&sspn=42.987658,93.076172&t=m&z=11 If you're putting that link in a conversation, you should be able to just paste it in. If you want it in an entry, you'll need to change each ampersand to & (an ampersand followed by the letters "amp" and a semicolon). It's a bit fiddly, but not too hard. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=50.73124,1.599026&hl=en&ll=50.737324,1.604004&spn=0.269429,0.727158&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.987658,93.076172&t=m&z=11 good luck

Was playing a bit myself I put in a link to where the border crossing was, (key word 'merged' in the Boarder Crossing' Section) with the arrow at the point I wanted people to see and zoomed out to view the entire area with the arrow up top. The link is a close-up of the arrow, right next to a reference to 'Last Chance Bar and Package'. If you put the little man in the road you can read the sign 'Last Chance Saloon' and if you turn him you can see the turn lane for the north causeway
This will take some playing with, I would like more control. The word search might work better as the link button on the lefty seems to have better zoom control.

Handy link Bob,

The real secret is also knowing the height of the object you are watching, add the two together, - say 6 feet to your eye on the deck of a small boat and the lamp of an 80foot lighthouse, when the light begins to dip over the horizon you know your distance

10.8 NM
or
12 a half land miles, the smaller decimals aren't all that importantsmiley - biggrin

The map idea is great as long as there aren't not too many pitfalls, broken links copyright law and we can get a reliable method in place. I don't think any of these are a problem.

As I said I don't think copyright is a problem, as we are redirecting to their site, not stealing images. It might be worth doing a bit of a search on google itself to see if the have a faq's page or fair-use statement.

The thought just crossed my mind, and it is probably worth a short search. I will leave that in your hands, although I would not ask too many question just yet.

Hi Bob;

Just tried another option

I pulled up a map of the Florida Keys from Homestead FL To Havana Cuba, put it into 'satellite view'
clicked the 'link' button in the upper right of the dialogue box and chose 'short url'. It seems to give the exact view I wanted.

Caution do not use the 'paste HTML to embed in website' That link contains '<' and '>' That makes hootoo think you are a robotsmiley - yikes, also they do not work in Guide ML.smiley - sorry

The 'short url' also seems to avoid the ampersand, although I only tried 1 link so-far.

The image is linked to 'The conch Republic' in my opening of my working entry.

Oops I was working on this while you were doing that. let me smiley - simpost before I forget my thought;

Just for fun I added another link in my line about Texas Independence, to the map of the Alamo, this time I zoomed in closer and used the short url option in the map mode.

We are probably better off to link in map mode and let the users with sufficient speed and bandwidth switch to satellite if they want to.
