Hi there FS
I'm subbing your joint Entry with bobstafford on 'The Crew of the HMS Victory at Trafalgar'. The edited version is A87781684. Please subscribe.
As usual with long, technical Entries, I've left it alone for a couple of days before reading it again. It's amazing how much still pops out of the woodwork
Anyway, have a read through and let me know here if you're happy with the finished Entry. I'll also leave a message on bob's PS to have a look at it.
Thanks for a most interesting Entry. It's one of the things I love about subbing - you learn so much more than you do by simply reading an Entry.

Just one minor nit pick
Only a few years before Trafalgar there had been two 'Great Mutinies'. The first – 16 April to 15 May, 1797 – occurred while the fleet was anchored at Spithead, an anchorage in the Solent near Portsmouth, and the city of Southampton.
Spithead, an anchorage in the Solent near Portsmouth, and the city of Southampton.
more corectley should read. This could be happily delt with in the footnote
The solent is from Lymington to Southampton water and on to Portsmouth. Spithead is an ancoage from Gilkicker point, Stokes Bay to just south of the mouth of Portsmouth harbour, between Ryde and Southsea.
I konw its pickey but just for the purests out there
............................................................
I hope you agree it is a modifacation to the footnote

I added the bit about the 'Isle of Wight' for Bluebottle, I would like to see it retained, only because it amuses him The references to Portsmouth and Southampton were added to support the links in the body of the text.
It is getting late here, I hope to leave a longer message in the morning.
Good Night

It is interesting that the brief mention of 'Spit Head' seems to be the main concern in this entry. H5, I notice that in line on pay you have changed my 'raise' into 'rise' this may well be a US / UK thing, could we compromise on 'increase'?
Bob, I did not intend this to be a 'Coastal Pilot', only a brief explanation for the reader who has only a sketchy knowledge of British geography. Most readers will have an idea of where the Isle of Wight and the Mainland are, and many will be familiar with either Portsmouth or Southampton. The 'Purists' will either know already, or be prepared to look it up themselves. I really don't want to get too technical here, I don't think I've implied anything that is not true.
In the section 'Enlistment of the Crew'
Men convicted of >a< minor crime could often exchange their prison sentence for service in the Royal Navy
Footnote 9> An oar-powered vessel, used to transport the captain from ship to shore and vice versa.
'or ship to ship' should be added, it was common for the captains to entertain each other at diner parties.

Men convicted of >a< minor crime could often exchange their prison sentence for service in the Royal Navy
a long overdue >increase< in pay
footnote 9 updated. I thought the bit about captains inviting each other to dinner parties should be included
change for the Spithead bit to follow

Spithead:
Having looked at the geography, would you both be happy with:
...while the fleet was anchored at Spithead, an anchorage at the eastern end the SolentThe body of water that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland., not far from the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.

I would still like to at least mention Southampton, both because we have a good link, and some might be familiar with the one and not the other
>...while the fleet was anchored at Spithead, an anchorage at the eastern end the SolentThe body of water that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland., not far from the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.
could we try;
...while the fleet was anchored at Spithead, an anchorage at the eastern end the SolentThe body of water that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland., not far from the entrance to Portsmouth harbour, and a bit south east of the commercial port of Southampton.
to be a pain, but I intentionally wrote that part to include both cities, although I do agree it is much closer to Portsmouth.

ok we'll go with that and you're not being a pain FS, after all it is your Entry. My job is simply to make it sparkle
Anything else before it sets sail for the FP?

Rosie here... butting into a very sensible conversation....
There is just one more thing that I would like to ask, on behalf of 'those-who-do-things'
You don't happen to have a suitable photo that you would like to add to your entry do you FS ? It would help 'those-who-do-things' an awful lot
If you have (and I'm sure you have) could you forward it to artists at h2g2 dot com
If you haven't, don't worry 'those-who-do-things' will hopefully find something to suit
Let me know??
Thank you, Rosie

Unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic to have any personal photos of HMS Victory (I do have a few of the SS American Victory, but she is a WW II US merchant steamer, and not at all appropriate)
I think a view of the ship itself would be most appropriate, and there are dozens available on line. Of course you will have to use one as an inspiration for your own interpretation.
A few sights you might want to look at
http://www.hms-victory.com/
Is the ship's official home page and contains several photos in its content.

The second to last image of the cut-away is my favourite, but probably a little overly ambitious
http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Hampshire/Portsmouth/HMS_Victory/pictures
There are a few here that could be inspiring, but it seems a bit dogey to me.
Let me know if you want any more thoughts.
Thanks
FS
PS I peeked at you work on my Nelson Entries, much better than I had hoped for, will try to leave a public recognition when we hit the FP

Thanks, Rosie I made the flippant remark about the "American Victory" in my post last night, however it occurred to me that when you get to my entry on sail to steam I do have several personal shots of some modern sail training ships, some of then taken from aboard the American Victory herself. We also had some speculation in the PR thread about what an appropriate image might be. Let me know in that subedit thread if you are interested.
Thanks again

Rosie, you misunderstood
The photos I was talking about might be suitable or my pending entry 'Sail to Steam' A87784320
The only pictures I have of victory are all under (c) by others
You might put a request in the original PR thread, there is someone who was subscribed there who lives near the area (not far from the Isle of Wight), and has an Artist's badge Not mentioning any names, mind you
FS
Thanks, Rosie
