Fear of Voting

I have always believed that Americans should vote. I registered to vote on my 18th birthday, and I have voted in every major election since then. When I hear about grown American citizens who have never registered to vote it really irks me. What's even worse though, are people who ARE registered to vote but (for some unknown reason) refuse to do so. I don't understand it.
With that said, I am actually considering not voting in the 2004 presidential election.
Why? Why would such a stern advocate of voting suddenly change her tune about the importance and responsibility of voting?
One word: Diebold.

When I first heard about the voting machines that are being produced, distributed and maintained by Diebold, Sequoia and ES&S, and the vast security issues associated with them, I was worried. But when I heard about the head of Diebold being a staunch Bush supporter, and the results of past elections conducted using these touch-screen voting machines, I was horrified. I couldn't (and still can't) believe that these corporations are being allowed to privitize the democratic system in this country. Not only do these companies make these machines, they tally the votes from the elections that they are being used in. How is this being permitted?? I can't find a good answer to this question.

What does this have to do with my voting or not voting?

I am concerned and outraged that MY vote (which WILL NOT be for Bush) will go for Bush. It's as simple as that. I am not convinced that the vote that I actually cast will go for the candidate that I actually voted for. I am angry that my vote could be stolen from me, and that makes me want to stay away from the polls come voting time.
I feel like I will be used and violated by this lying, thieving administration and their corporate lackeys. And that makes me sick to my stomach.

And where is the opposition to these touch-screen machines? I hear about all sorts of warnings, investigations, accusations, etc...but I don't see any action being taken by anyone who could actually stop this from happening. I can't find a single article about any senators, governors, house members, etc. who are actively opposing these machines with legislation. I can only hope that I am just not looking hard enough and that there are measures being taken to stop the installation of these machines in every polling place from New York to L.A. by November of 2004. I really hope that I am just ignorant of the MASSIVE opposition of these machines by our nations law makers. I really hope that is the case.

In the end, I'm sure that I will still vote. I don't think that I could live with myself if I didn't cast a vote AGAINST Bush in 2004, but I am not confident that it will make a difference. I'm not secure in the fact that my vote will really matter. As an American citizen, I should feel confident and proud when I go to the polls and cast my vote. I shouldn't feel the way that I know I will be feeling on that day in November of 2004. I shouldn't feel like I am being abused and ignored. I don't believe that is what the election process is supposed to be all about. I'm positive it's not what the founding fathers of this country wanted. I just wish that the people who have the power to make this stop felt the same way that I do.

We're not in Kansas anymore...

smiley - wah There is a horrible storm moving towards my city at the moment. It prompted a tornado warning and there are wind gusts up to 60 MPH. Hail, lightening, the whole shebang.
I'm deathly afraid of these types of storms. **hides in basement**

Hopefully I'll be posting more later!!

**stops on the way to the basement to grab a piece of smiley - cake!!** smiley - run

I'll be modifying "My Space" in the days to come. I need to figure out what I want to say and how I want the page to look.
I guess that's all for now. **rummages through article after article**
