A Truely Barbaric Act

Many bits and bytes have been dedicated recently to changes on h2g2. Disscussion seems devoted in the main to the profanity filter, and a new fad for yikesing. On these I cannot comment, they don't affect me much, and I am undecided.

Yet little attention has been paid to the true atrocity commited. Those of an emotional disposition may wish to look away now.

The beloved 'Infinite Improbability Drive' has been renamed to 'Random Edited Entry'!!!

Gone is the mystery, the intrigue, replaced by this bland disgrace. The thrill previously was that of the unknown, the pioneering spirit, the adventure, of clicking a link with unclear outcome. The name promised unnumbered, unlimited possibilities, endless oppurtunities, freedom. Yet this has now been destroyed.

I am disgusted. smiley - sadface

I can only concur. It must be something to do with New Labour and the pressure it's putting on the BBC, (see Private Eye, passim)...There are 9 less letters in REE (the cuts), the words are less complicated and you don't have to have read the book - or any book - to get the meaning (wider access issues).

I absolutely agree. smiley - smiley It seems to be a symbol of all the changes that have recently taken place, and it makes me very uneasy.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
