Whatever

Exactly what makes my life "buzz" by? Who can say. At this particular time in my life, it — my life — really seems to be buzzing by. Five days a week I get up early, shower, walk the dog, get my missus outta bed, make breakfast, occasionally shovel snow, then head off for work. Evenings are spent making and consuming dinner, then some quiet time in front of the tube, sometimes on the computer, then walk the dog before bed, and up we goto replenish our batteries for the next day. Some nights we go out to eat or see a play or hear some music. Weekends are spent recharging what's been spent during the week. We get the weekend papers and read them, or read our latest books. Sounds pretty mundane, doesn't it. Yeah, I know. We had all these great plans when we were younger. Not going to settle down into long-term jobs; not gonna own a home; just gonna be gypsies. Well, that didn't happen. We did the gypsy thing for a few years, but found it hard to get by, and eventually we wanted to have some things. I have been at my job now for nearly 27 years. My missus "retired" a few years ago from a job she'd been at for 14 years —she's working again now. I'm just a few years shy of retiring, and after that, we both hope to do some travelling around. We have gotten our sorry butts over the pond to Holland, France and Italy in the last couple of years, and plan more of that while we still have two decent incomes (yeah, we live in N. America). It just seems that the crap that fills in the spaces between adventures gets more boring as it goes on. Gets harder and harder to get excited about things.

Post Election Blues (?)

Canada went to thew polls yesterday (Jan. 23/06) and elected a minority Conservative government. Do I feel blue? Yes, and no. Things could have been far worse--we could have gotten a Conservative majority. The Conservative leader is Stephen Harper, and he professes an American style conservatism. Fortunately, he only has a slim minority, and no "natural" partner to hold the balance of power, the only party with enough votes to bolster the minority is the Bloc Québecois, who have 51 seats (Harper's Conservatives have 124, and they neeed 155 for a majority). The left-leaning NDP (New Democratic Party) managed to boost their total to 29, but not enough to hold the balance of power, and, thus, have any control over the Conservative agenda. Obviously, the opposition Liberals would not enter into a coalition with the Conservatives as that would probably kill popular support for both parties. Gonna be a wild ride. I can see us Canucks going to the polls agin in less than a year, although minority governments last, on average, about 18 months to two years. Arrrgh!

Been a long time by the looks of it

I was just going over my journal entries. God, what a bore I can be sometimes. Got rid of most of the crap. Just realized that I haven't visited this site in well over a year. Looks pretty much the same, though. Since last visited this place, I have been to the Bahamas, Amsterdam and Paris, and will be heading to Key Largo soon. Gotta keep moving while I'm still able. Mid-fifties codger with a hankering for some travel. Me and the missus got a motorhome (caravan to the Europeans-yep, we live on the western shores of the Atlantic pond), and have gotten some good use out of it over the last few years. Still a few years before retirement, so can't get away for more than a few weeks at a time. Wanna spend all my time in warm climates, so south in winter and north for summers. Still a lot of Europe to explore, not to mention Asia, Africa , etc. (I told you not to mention them).
Loved Amsterdam. Was there for a month 30 years ago. Lots has changed, but lots has not. Quite the liveable city. Paris, wow, what a place. Where Amsterdam is quite small-scale and liveable, Paris is monumental. Beautiful, full of life, expensive (so what), and still a place where you can live. Greatest impression is how much more relaxed the pace is in both cities. We here in north America hustle hustle hustle all the time. When we're not working, we think about work. We need everything yesterday. Today is way too late, and tomorrow in unthinkable. What a freakin' mess.
What else. The missus has taken up playing old-time country fiddle this year. She's played classical all her life, but is really getting into the country stuff. I've re-discovered my guitar, and accompany her occasionally. Me, I'm a folk, 60's soul and rock guy (playing-wise), although I have a fondness for the "jazz" of the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
Hard to think of the 1900s as last century. Makes the phrase "turn of the century" a bit hollow--kinda removes us somewhat from the 1914-45 era somehow. Doesn't have quite the same meaning in a 21st century context. Must be me, or something I ate. I'm rambling and a bit incoherent as I write. Go figure.
Anyway, dear journal, time to go. Hope to get back here sooner than next year. Hasta la vista, til we meet again (yeah, it's redundant).

What a wonderful world

Who needs a subject. Looks like old Dubbya finally got caught in it, but, als, who seems to care??? Latest buzz on CNN has it that it doesn't really matter if SH has no weapons of mass destruction, or had any, or a nuclear program, yadda-yadda…. The people say he had to go, and if you gotta bend the truth a bit to get support, why then, go ahead and bend it. Just another prime example of why this place makes for a good bit of appropriation for empty space. Mostly harmless…yeah, right — maybe to the rest of the universe, but certainly not locally. Let's go get Iran now. They're the next link in the axis of evil. Then North Korea, and then--who knows, we'll think of someone.
