* SARS stands for Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome. The disease is thought to have originated in China's southern Guangdong province and was spread around the world by air travellers.

* The incubation period can be up to 10 days. Symptoms are similar to flu, including high fever, headaches, sore throat and cough.

* More than 500 people worldwide have died as a result of infection. There is no known
cure and no vaccine.

* Scientists think SARS stems from a virus sinilar to that responsible for the common cold, which has mutated, making it far more dangerous.

* The infection is probably transmitted through droplets of body fluids - produced by sneezing or coughing - or from contaminated surfaces such as life buttons.

* Masks are thought to offer only very limited protection. Frequent washing of hands and avoiding touching the eyes, nose and mouth can help stop the virus's spread.

* The UK Government advises travellers to avoid affected areas such as Hong Kong and parts of China, including Beijing.
