Carers Week

(I mean real unpaid carers, not paid careworkers, who can clock off and find another job if they want to.)

Halfway through already, so anything different this week? No.

There was a PRTC sponsored walk along the Thames on Sunday, and there's a local day of wellbeing today organised by the local authority funded carers group, but haven't got the time or energy to get to either.

Maybe that sounds apathetic & lazy, well try being on call 24/7 indefinitely and then see how much time or energy you can find. Maybe you think carers are special saintly people or mugs. Sorry to disappoint you - carers are human beings who bleed, swear, cry and snap just like anyone else.

We save the NHS billions of pounds each year, but Carers Allowance is not going to be considered for reform because it would allegedly cost millions of pounds. FYI Carers Allowance is only payable to a handful of carers (can't get it if you earn too much, can't get it if you get a state pension, Widow's Benefit, or Incapacity Benefit, can't get it if your caree isn't currently in receipt of attendance allowance or middle rate care component DLA, have to do at least 35 hours of care/attention/supervision a week). Carers Allowance is currently £46.90 per week or income related (aka means tested) benefit + £25 premium and a £10 christmas bonus.

Compare and contrast this with foster carers, who get over £100 per week per child, with extra money for birthdays and treats. IMHO foster carers earn every penny they get, but how come carers are valued so much less?

There it goes...

You know how it is, there are things you promised yourself you'd never ever say? I don't mean swear words or things like that. I mean things like "you'll understand when you're older" or "this country's going to the dogs".

I nearly said it. And maybe the person deserved it, and maybe they didn't. But when I was on the receiving end of it I hated it. I'm beginning to see what may have driven others to say it, or at least think it.

The offending phrase? "The Craft is not for the spoonfed"

It's not triggered by just one gormless question, it's the effect of countless people apparently not even using what sense they were born with.
