Rivkeh Yankee-Shoes... bashing about the BoE again Started conversation May 6, 2003
Hello! I'm your friendly neighborhood ACE (Assistant Community Editor), and I'm here to welcome you to the Guide! I see you've been around a little bit, how are you getting along? Any questions? Need help? Just reply to this posting!!!
I'm a big Douglas Adams fan, and I think we're close in age (and a little closer in Geography than some on the Guide)... feel free to check out my personal space!
Yankee-shoes.
Welcome!

I checked out your space and it seems we do have quite alot in common!
I'm glad that you recognized the name. I figured that quite a few people would, and now I'm think that a couple of people might have it! I just started reading hitchhiker. I've got a book that contains the whole series and that's my project. I love it so far. I'll be on alot! my job isn't the most interesting thing in the world, but I have internet access so here I am!
Welcome!

Yeah... The books rock, I've been reading them since I was about 10... you're gonna be surprised about the petunias later, I suspect but I won't say anything else to ruin it... I started on the radio scripts and have seen the BBC series, so the Guide was my obvious next.
I'm on quite a bit myself, especially when I sub for the computer teacher... I'm the drama director of the touring team at the boarding school I work at, so sometimes I fill in for the more full timers.
So do you know about the "Add to Friends" option? Click that and it subscribes you to other folk's journals... I'm gonna add you to mine, if that's okay... and you can see what's up with them and get to know peeps a little better.
Well ! I have a new friend on the Guide... and I may not even tease you too much about being Canadian... Eh?
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 7, 2003
yeah I know, I try and be so cautious when I'm around people from other countries because I know that I get majorly sassed for using eh.
This is great! thanks for adding me on to your list.
Drama is another thing we now have in common. I love it. I've been in about two plays and two musicals. The last one I was in was a local Ottawa company did the Rocky Horror Picture show and I got to play Columbia. It was awesome.
Right now I'm studying Public affairs(not very artsy) but I'm actually considering doing a teaching abroad program after I'm done. have you heard of the JET program?
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 8, 2003
I'm not exactly sure what the acronym is for but the program is for people with a university degree. It doesn't matter which one. they send you off to Japan to teach english. You get to pick what type of setting you'd like, it can be rural or urban. You have a minimum amount of time that you've got to stay there for (I believe that it's one year) and then you can extend your contract if you want. It's a paying job and aparently you get paid descently enough that you come back having made some money. I'd want to do the rural areas. I hear that you become kindof a town celebrity and plus I want to do development work.
so that's the deal with JET.
I think that it sounds pretty interesting to say the least.

So, do you speak Japanese?
I think that sounds sooo awesome!!! I really want to travel abroad... trying to save up for South Africa right now... but it's going slow as I went to the mall with the school, and ended up at bookstores and Victoria's Secret... both irresistable for me, even though I'm not a big shopper.
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 8, 2003
I completely understand!
I'm saving up for a trip to Australia next summer and I work 5 min away from a huge mall. Lingerie is definately one of favorites to buy, the other stores that I can't resist are art stores. AHHH! It drives me crazy to walk into one. I could spend hours and hours there.
I don't speak Japanese(which you don't have to have for the program)
but I do speak Ukrainian, and french, and a tiny tiny bit of Spanish.
(introduction to spanish was spent learning to say phrases like "me gusta el queso"--I like cheese)
Welcome!

I love art stores too... but my Granny just gave me EVERYTHING any art fiend could dream of.
I speak a little bit o' spanish, and am trying to pick up Hebrew, but it is taking forever to teach myself. I think Hebrew is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.

It's a very beautiful language. The writing itself is a work of art. How did you manage to get tbis score from your granny and what kind of stuff does it have in it?
Welcome!

My Granny used to be really into all forms of arts and crafts, and she has been really really sick. Before she became bedridden, I spent a month off work taking care of her down in Ohio, and she gave me all her loot because she wasn't interested in it anymore... it has every medium you could want, plus a desktop easel in the main art case (a wooden custom made art case) and a giant studio easel. Lucky me!

Wow! that sounds incredible!
I hope you're making your granny proud and putting it to good use?

Well, I'm mostly working in charcoal, and pen and ink right now... hoping to take some more art classes this summer... want to do watercolor with my mentor too. I've been playing with my acrylics, and that's been fun.
I'm actually primarily a cartoonist.
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 8, 2003
that's wonderfull!
A lady in my office is about to have her first baby so she's asking me to do some acrylic painings for her.Little did I know that she'd be giving me 3 25"x25" canvasses and a 25"x55". wow. I've got alot ahead of me. This is the first time I'll be doing something this big, I've already visualized myself infront of them, pertified and not being able to touch them. Have you had anything published as a cartoonist?
Welcome!
Rivkeh Yankee-Shoes... bashing about the BoE again Posted May 8, 2003
I had a page in my old Youth Groups newsletter to do their Verseman cartoon. Hoping to get my own comic going this summer. I used to send my Fratman comics to my buddy down in Texas, but we've both run out of ideas for that for the time being.
I can't imaging working on canvas that big... what is the subject of the paintings?

the woman asked me to do a sort of under the sea and beach theme for her child's room. I found this great book that has this little girl with flaming red hair who goes to the beach with her little brother for the day so we've decided on that. Right now things are a real mess because I'm in the middle of painting my room and I have to have all of my stuff back in it by Saturday! so the project is postponed untill next week. I'm really nervous about it all but at the same time I'm incredibly excited.
Welcome!

How cool! Sounds like a hectic project, though.
I'm moving back home in a month, and I think I'll be doing some homemade stenciling around the tops of my walls... I'm thinking Hebrew in deep purple and/or mehndi rust? My folks said it was okay, even though I may only be up there for the summer or so.
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 8, 2003
that sounds really cool.
what colour are the walls to begin with? and what have you decided to write?
Welcome!
Rivkeh Yankee-Shoes... bashing about the BoE again Posted May 8, 2003
The walls are tragically white. I think I'm gonna either do what my tattoo says which (translated) is "I am my Beloved's and He is mine" or another from Song of Solomon like "His banner over me is Love", or maybe a different one for each wall.
Welcome!
bowl of petunias Posted May 8, 2003
that sounds really beautifull.
I just got your other entry, I'm really sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. I'm glad that even though it is serious you're taking a great positive outlook on it. The weather over here is gorgeaous also. I took a wlk over my lunch break and bought myself a couple of things. Weezer is fantastic!! are you a Ben Harper fan?
