Hi Ed,
It was a busy place, lots of people coming in to the city from the countryside to work in the mills. Manchester was known as "Cottonopolis" because it was the centre of cotton production in England, nay, the world.
Lots of poor (often Irish) living in very cramped, insanitary conditions in the centre of the city whilst the mill owners lived outside in the suburbs. Interestingly, it was a new breed of industrial, non-conformist middle class that were making the running rather than the still-agricultural aristocracy. There was a real sense of economic mobility for a few years before it ossified.
It was a pretty intresting time and place, IMHO.
Cheers for the ask!
Jim
