It's time for another in my series of free research sites.
Old Maps Online lets you browse digitised historical maps from all over the world. It's a project set up by geographers at the University of Portsmouth, UK.
It's easy to use - search for the area on a Google Maps-type interface, zoom to the scale you want and the available maps are listed on the right. If you don't see the one you need, try zooming out a bit.
I've just located a map of my home town from before my house was built, and discovered all sorts of things I never knew were there - a Roman villa and pottery kiln among other things.

Cheers Icy, what a find! Only time for a quick look but I got straight to a map from 1789 with the farmhouse marked on it. I live in a barn attached to the farmhouse. It has been renovated

It jumped straight to where I was raised, not where I was born, not where I live now. How odd. I wonder if it used facebook data.

No map available from where I live - no wonder though, it used to be the bottom of the sea. Most of the ground is red sand. Pines love it.
