That must have been an amazing sight.
I know there are professional crowd-estimators. One came close to an accurate estimate of the crowd at the first Obama inauguration.
It would be nice if Greek journalists would consult them. When I lived in Athens, the newspapers routinely claimed that a million people had congregated in Syntagma Square.
Now, ask Gnomon if he thinks 1 million people will FIT in Syntagma Square.

Well, even if they spilled out onto the road and the space in front of the parliament, there's only 234m x 137m. For a space that size to hold a million people, you'd have to pack 31 people per square metre, which would be a tight squeeze.
