Hi hel 2, I'm ca's daughter the one with the rats, she got me onto this site and it does look really good just getting to grips with it. I needed to ask a question if you dont mind, its about my 2 rats twinkle and dazzle. I know my mums already asked if spaying them would help their behaviour but one of my darlings (twinkle) has a few scabs on her. I think its from fighting with her sister dazzle cos they do get quite nasty and you have to shout at them to stop, which helps for a bit. I've checked for any little mites or nits in her fur but to no avail, i can only think its from fighing cos the one always seems to be constantly tryin to hump the other. So i'm definately going to get them spayed, i hate the squeaking noises they make when their fighting. Anyway as my mum has said i'm a bit obsessed with rats so i'd better stop blabbering on about them. Anyway love to hear your views on them. byee byee for now

The problem you have is that one of your ratties is an 'alpha' rat, this may cause some overgrooming, which is causing the scabs, and yes spaying will help, so will separating the ratties for a period, My friend S had a similar problem, she has a docile semi long hair, Floosie, who has very sensitive skin, spaying Mixi helped, as did introducing a third female rat, to deflect Mixis grooming
Make sure to that your rats are not overfeed, a skinny rat will live longer than a fat one to much protein can also cause skin problems
Hope this helps
Helly
