Welcome to h2g2!
Its a kind of a mad place, but very enjoyable with lots of interesting people to get to know.
The best thing to do is to wander around, find something you are interested in and then jump into the conversation. There is so much, you are bound to find something to interest you. and you can always write something and get other people talking to you!
I'm in Berlin myself, working in Dahlewitz. I speak so little German its terrible, but Im enjoying myself out here.
If you have any questions, or need any pointers, just ask. I'll help as much as I can!
Hi! Welcome...

Hello again! Here comes something longer as promised...
Thanks for the invaluable first welcoming words. You made me feel part of it already!
Yes, I have already often felt the need to contribute to a conversation on a long list of topics, so that´s why I thought I would join!
So you live in Berlin!!! Where or what is Dahlewitz? I live in the centre practically, in Friedrichshain. Up till a month ago, I used to live on Potsdamer Platz (opposite Cinemaxx), but that became too expensive since I became unemployed in July last year (company went bust, what else!).
My German is quite okay now that I have lived in this country for 7 years. And that´s despite the fact that I have only studied German for a couple of years in total (at the local VolksHochSchule). So if YOU need any help (with the authorities or official German documents of any sort), get in touch!
By the way, are there any entries on Germany, German, foreigners in Germany, Greeks... Okay, I´d better do a search and find out myself. That´s already something I think I will write about with great pleasure and ease!
Happy Valentine´s by the way! (No GuideML yet, so my collection of smileys is very limited!)

Hi C!
Im glad you feel welcome. h2g2 is a great place to be. At least I think so!
I work in the town of Dahlewitz, to the south of the city. I live in Lichtenrade - a bit far from the center, but the trains are really good here so its no bother at all for me to come in and out as like please. Friedrichsain is quite central...
I've got all my documents sorted out (I hope, nobody has said not!) thanks, but its cool to know that there is someone else out there on h2g2 who is in this city. And there is lots of German researchers - I just cant remember the links. Searching is a great idea.
The Smileys are easy - there is a whole list of them, and if you click on any smiley, you can go see the page. Click this rose for instance!
And GuideML isnt too scary, its pretty much like normal HTML.
So what do you do in the city? Have you found another job yet???
Talk soon! Hope you've had a great Valentines Day!!!
Hi! Welcome...

... and I just read about the love of your life (and the rest of your personal space ... and his). So cute!!!! I´m very glad for you two! (although the distance is definitely a bugger!)
Lichtenrade is a bit far (to the south right?) but as long as you don´t have a problem!
I will look for the German researchers, thanks
No job yet, but I have started doing some project work from home as a kind of an "unconventional probation period" for a company in Frankfurt. Hopefully they will hire me in March (4 days there, 3 here) or I will get another job in the meantime here! Always optimistic!
And you are doing research here? For a company I assume or is there a University in Dahlewitz?
Valentine´s started off very nicely with my love. I haven´t seen him since he left for work, but we will catch up now. Hooray!
Enjoy your DD´s virtual presence!

Hmmm.. I really do need to update that Personal Space! I graduated last year, and have since been working in an aerospace company - initially for 6 months, but I've now been here for 10 - helping them in their Programme Management training. Its been good fun, but its kinda dragging now. Im looking forward to going back to the UK if Im truthful!
Lichtenrade is down south, but its close (ish) to work, and thats more important for me - the center of town is only a 20 minute ride away, and it gives me lots of time to read!
Ooh! That would be nice! Ive not been to Frankfurt, but from what Ive heard its an interesting place.
Enjoy Valentines - I shall on the phone later on tonight! Just as soon as I drag myself out of this internet cafe!
Hi! Welcome...

Working for an aerospace company That´s a very good career move! Be patient, the time will come, when you are back in the UK and very much in demand (because they take the Germans very seriously there).
Yes, Frankfurt is an interesting (i.e. very rich) place. Its riches is just about everything it´s got to offer though. I prefer Berlin. It´s more interesting culturally. 25% of Friedrichshain where I now live are foreigners and that makes that part of the city more well-balanced. But of course there is very little work here and that´s why many people have to look elsewhere.
I hope you enjoyed your Valentine phonecall and have had many more since
Did you notice my subtle use of smileys in this posting? I can´t stop!!!
Have a nice evening

The smileys are sooo addictive. In fact, they may be even more addictive than the site - so you have to stay here just to use the smileys...
Oh, I got lots of CV points in the job. Its abroad, aerospace (therefore I have to be reliable, and trustworthy and lots of other things too), blue chip company, I know how to use the programme managing side of SAP *gasp*... Loads and loads of CV points
Berlin is so fantastic. I've been to so many of the museums. Its just totally breathtaking some of the things that are here. And I've just started going to a couple of concerts and plays with one of the guys I work with - its so amazing. ]
My Valentines call was really lovely... I miss DD loads. But we do get to talk every night, so I cant miss him too much. I miss his cuddles though! I hope your beloved took you out somewhere nice in this lovely city, or did something terribly romantic...
