A worthwhile gift.
Posted Nov 14, 2007
I'm not a lover of christmas, every year i spend X amount of pounds on toys and gifts for my family, which could go to a better cause. Thats not to say that i don't think my family are not a good cause. When i think of all the toys that i have bought the grandkids, that never see the light of day after christmas, it seems such a waste
Stay with me, this is going to ramble a bit
I have found the perfect gift this year, that will suit both adults and children. It's a gift that can help animals and nature
WH Smiths have a series of adoption packages which can be bought and make a perfect The packs range from £20 - £25 depending which pack you choose. The smaller packs are: save a bluebell wood, plant a tree, adopt an area of rainforest, adopt a turtle and adopt an orang-utan. These packs include an information booklet and something relating to what pack you have bought, plus an activation card for the person recieving the gift.
The larger packs are all specific animals. Each pack contains a plush toy of your chosen animal and various bits of information, including a personal story of your adopted animal and activation card. The person recieving the gift will get letters from their animal and a certificate. I cant' think of a better present
I bought three Two for the grandkids and one for me. I'm going to tell you Ginny's story, from the card that was inside the box.

Visitors from accross the world
Posted Sep 2, 2007
It's been a busy couple of days.
Yesterday, my friends arrived from Canada for a 5 day visit. Some of you will know Rev Nick, he and his wife are over here for 2 weeks, to visit friends and places.
They had a bit of a nightmare with the trains, with engineering works in progress. What should have been a straightforward train journey, had them all over the place on different lines and then buses. Finally they arrived here, more than a little tired.
I had made the decision that i was going to cook This was a brave decision considering my ability to cremate just about everything Anyway, i made my smoked Haddock quiche and it turned out just right, no one was more suprised at that than me
We looked at photos and talked about loads of stuff, it was a good evening
Today, i showed them my place of work and we also visited the farm accross the road.
My family arrived and we all went into town for lunch. We went to a chinese restaurant, where they did a buffet. It's not the one i usually go to, but it was ok. We then went for a walk around the town and around the small cathederal. The Rev and his Wife were very impressed with the history of the catherderal.
We said goodbye to my family and headed back to my house. After gathering their luggage, Nick and Mrs Nick departed for their hotel. I imagine they will both be shattered and sleep well
Tomorrow, we are off to London to take in the sights. Tower of London and Westminster Abbey.
It should be a good day.

Nature at work.
Posted Aug 25, 2007
We all now how amazing nature is, but it never fails to surprise me.
A short while ago, i was sitting watching the activities in my pond. Thats not what i went in the garden for, but i can never resist a look. There were hundreds of flying ants emerging all over the garden and alot had fallen into the pond. The first on the scene to grab a meal were the pond skaters, followed by something i had never seen before. Suddenly all these small leeches came to the surface, there were hundreds of them As i watched they too attached themselves to the drowning ants. Some of the many baby newts came to investigate, they did'nt take any of the ants. I wondered if perhaps they were too big for the tiny newts to manage.
I also took the opportunity to catch some of these ants and feed them to my pitcher plants.
Anyway back to the pond. I've had endless problems with algae for the past few weeks, despite treating it regularly the problem is'nt improving Whilst watching the ants struggle to get out of the water, it dawned on me why the algae is so bad; all my snails have dissapeared I'm wondering if the large number of leeches in the pond could be responsible for the demise of my lovely snails?
Now i have a dilemma. Do i get more snails now and hope they survive, or do i wait untill Auntumn when maybe the leeches will go away? I don't even know how they arrived in the pond to start with and if they will go away or die in winter Anyone know how to get rid of leeches?

Homer meets the big guy.
Posted Jul 17, 2007
I've just seen a news item on the tv.
Someone has painted a huge Homer Simpson in his underpants next to the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset. Homer appears to be offering the big guy a doughnut. I know it's not the done thing, but it is really funny!
Sorry i don't have a link, you'll have to find one yourselves
