I could have bought a jar of marmite in the English shop on Saturday, but € 12.00 for 500g seemed somewhat expensive for a bit of yeast and salt.

Having compared the price that I pay, versus the average price in the UK, that really isn't too bad. But the jar that I find is only 125g, so if you found it not quite to your taste, YOU would have a dozen year's worth of the stuff. Even I wouldn't buy that large a measure.

I've once tried Vitam R - the German equivalent, and I decided it would be cheaper to just swallow a teaspoon of salt.

So you had said once. I've found a few combinations with other foods that work very nice, as it is quite strong alone. I think it was tsarina that offered marmite with peanut butter. Now THAT is yummy.
